Hello all,

I need a new surround for my TTR's headlight (don't ask!) However, Mine looks like this:

Headlight1.jpg

Headlight2.jpg

But on eBay they are like this or this which are clearly different. So, which is the standard for this bike? Or should I just buy a generic light like this on TotallyTTRs? Does anyone have one of these? Have you got a photo of how it looks fitted?

Thanks, Nigel.

Hi Nigel

Yours is the original TTR headlight unit as fitted to the official UK model. New ones are available here at a good price w

Blue_original_headlight_surround.jpg

Earlier blue imports (and current Australian models I think) have headlights like this:
Headlight_Europe_new1.jpg

Headlight_Europe_new2.jpg

US headlights are usually like this - a blue version of the UK metal-tanked OE ones:

UK metal-tanked OE headlight as fitted to UK TTRs:
 Headlight Unit white1a.jpg

White plastic headlight as fitted to Australian metal-tanked OE models. An improvement on the UK version as they have a glass light lens and run a halogen bulb. The same headlight unit as fitted to many Australian XT225 machines.

Australian white OE b.jpg

The Polisport headlights are a good match for the TTR - here is a pic of one fitted:
Polisport headlight fitted.jpg

For the sake of completeness, this is the standard Raid headlight - some have a small windshield fitted - but not this one:

Hi TTRFan,

Thanks for the thorough explanation of all the differences, I guess that as the TTRs weren't officially imported into the UK for very long, 2nd hand ones like mine don't come up for sale very often. It's not easy to tell from the photos how interchangeable they are between models.

I don't expect to ride the bike in the dark very often (or at all, probably) but is the Polisport version better than the OE? If so, I'd probably go for that as it looks pretty good on the bike.

Thanks for your help,
Nigel.

The yokes on which the headlight mounting brackets are attached are the same on all models. There might be some variations on these brackets but, basically, all the headlights are pretty much interchangeable.

I am guessing the Polisport and OE units are pretty similar in output. Anyone else able to comment from experience?

any suggestions how to improve a OE headlamp? (short of fitting a Raid one) Anyone fitted a cheap, more powerful aftermarket bulb that goes in without too much messing about?

Have a look at Mr Blonde's post. The OE lens is plastic and a bigger capacity bulb might melt it so a glass replacement unit would be the way to go.

I am sure there will be quite a lot of interest in upgrading the OE headlight with a glass unit.

Did you buy a complete TTR headlight as per the 2nd pic and, if so, have you managed to source a bracket yet?

The 2nd pic is from is from your post TTR fan.

All the wrecker had was the headlight and the suround.

I can get a New bracket for NZ$90 dollars.I have looked around the New Zealand bike wreckers with no luck.
I might have to bite the bullet and pay the $90

Depending what bulb you have installed at present, you may be able to go a bit higher wattage. I went from 15/15 to 35/35. Huge improvement. I have a raid with an OE headlight, so the fitting was a bit different, but I would recommend checking your bulb against the pictures on the www.totallyttrs.com site.

Hi Don

Don't know if you have been following my project bike thread but I had exactly the same problem. I had a brand new blue headlight unit like you just bought but it is designed for the blue bikes with the cable-driven speedos and wouldn't fit. The digital speedo is too big for it to fit around cry

If you do get yours to fit, can you post up some pics of your modifications as I will probably copy them!

Good luck.

Hi Brian-I was hoping you had a better idea than me.D'OH
My only idea -is to bend a bit of sheet steel/aluminium like the headlight that there now.(the black one)
then bend down the two tabs at the top of the new bracket.(the blue one)
Then attach the new headlight to the home made bracket, then make a stay at the bottom.

P.s I am following your project bike thread now.

Good second-hand genuine "blue" TTR headlights with glass lenses are getting rarer by the day and new ones are an extortionate price no

I have tried a couple of headlight solutions today on my OE project bike with digital speedo - both very successful.

Firstly I tried a new headlight off a late WR250F. Sadly not a glass unit but it seems to throw a strong beam. It has a 36W/36.5W halogen bulb.

The beam adjuster is nicely accessible and there is a lot of movement available.

WRF headlight1.jpg

Plenty of room for the digital speedo.

WRF headlight2.jpg

It needed a lead adapter making up to connect to the OE loom.

WRF headlight4.jpg

The WRF headlight has two locating holes at the bottom which locate on pegs on the WRF. It was fairly straight forward to rig up a bracket to replicate the pegs. The pic below shows work in progress.

I have road tested the headlight in the dark and it is very good wink

WRF headlight5.jpg

The second headlight I tried was a new glass unit off an earlier WR250F. It has a 60W/55W H4 halogen bulb so I am guessing it will be good. I have now refitted it.

The beam adjuster on this headlight is also nicely accessible and there is a lot of movement available.

This one needed a lead adapter making up but to a different design. Pic to come.

Early WRF headlight.jpg

Early WRF headlight 2.jpg

I used an original blue lower headlight mount. I chopped off the locating peg to make it easy to adjust.

WR250F headlight2.jpg

A bend in the plate put the locating captive nut in the right place so I needn't have bothered chopping off the peg no

WR250F headlight3.jpg

Easy fit and it didn't need a special bracket making up from scratch. It was a 5 minute job to adjust the blue headlight lower mount to centralise it biggrin.

This one has a glass lens so it will take a bulb upgrade without melting the lens.

The beam on this headlight seems about the same brightness and width as the pointy headlight but appears to have more depth. Main beam seems to cover more area but difficult to judge without the two headlights being run together.

The biggest benefit over the pointy headlight is that it takes readily available H4 bulbs Just had a quick look on eBay and the range of H4 bulbs is big!

I think it may be a fruitless quest but has anyone managed to find a replacement headlight unit for the Open Enduro with a glass light unit and in white plastic?

I get asked quite often and it would be good to have a solution to offer.

Hi Brian,

I have been following this thread with a lot interest. I fitted a Honda XL200 (assembled in Brazil) headlight so that I could use an H4 55/60W bulb and while the light is good, it required too many brackets to get it to sit right and then on can't adjust the beam once it's bolted!

I love the look of the late model WR250F headlight but I don't know if 36W is good enough for night riding here in Kenya where streetlights aren't everywhere. The early model WR250F headlight looks good too and it's great it doesn't need a bracket made. Hurrah for the H4 bulb. Please let us know how well it illuminates at night and keep up the excellent work. A great many of us depend on you!!

WR Headlight on a TTR?

Hi there!

I'm about to replace my headlight and I was wondering if anyone has tried fitting this one on a TTR?

WR 450F Headlight

Any known issues? Just want to make sure I've got everything I need before I take on this, my TTR is my only transport and I'd hate to end up stuck with no working headlight

Thanks!

That's cheap!

I fitted one of these "pointy" headlights to a TTR. The time consuming bit is making up a bit of a complex bracket to hold the bottom of the unit.

See here and scroll down to my 17 August message.

Please to have helped. I can take some better pics if you decide to go ahead.

There are lots of projects I haven't tried personally; fitting USD forks,  tuning the engine (porting, valve timing etc), super moto wheels, tuning up a carb/exhaust on a dyno, building a totally black TTR, etc etc w

A big challenge would be to find a cheap alternative rear mudguard b

Hi everyone, I came across this interesting link which reckons that you can ft a Yammy RD headlight to the TTR fairly cheaply. Has anyone done this please? I need some more candlepower!

Cheers Mud

"How can I improve the lights on the open Enduro?
Either (a) fit the whole headlamp assembly from a Raid which are designed for roadwork and are 50/55W compared to the Open Enduro's 33/36.5W. I have just fitted a Raid headlight assembly to my TTR and the difference is amazing - well worth the £40 I paid for the s/h assembly complete. The lighting coil on the TTR produces a healthy output and can run a 100W H4 halogen bulb but check it fits before investing - these bulbs will fit the after-market Acerbis HP lamp which has a glass lens that can handle the heat of the bulb. The standard headlight switch and wires may be suspect running the bigger bulb and it may be worth using heavier gauge wires from the switch to the headlamp.

or (b) install a 250LC pattern headlight and headlight brackets from M&P for a total of £46 (£26 for the light, £20 for the brackets).
PS If you don't like the "headlight always on" then fit a simple push on and off switch (about £4.00) and splice it into the yellow and black wires just by the left hand bar switch."

Welcome to TTR land, Ian.

Why not try a different bulb HERE

OR

Try a different headlight HERE

Check that yours doesn't just need a replacement bulb firstly. The dip fillament could be bust and a bulb is cheaper than a complete headlamp.

'94 TTR OE headlight upgrade.

Evening all,

Need a bit of advice from people who have  a lot more TTR knowledge than me.

I'm looking at upgrading the standard OE 'firefly' headlight for on-road/off-road night riding i.e Long Distance Trials. I've been looking at replacing the whole headlight unit. Trail Tech have a X2 35/35w Halogen set up that looks quite good. I know from having a look at the 'Mods' page on here the TTR can potentially support a decent unit.

I've had a response from Trail Tech and they've said it's feasible to add the X2 unit, but, I'd prefer to get feedback from the people that know. Failing that I'm open to suggestions smile

Many thanks

Why not just replace the Bayou bulb with a  Super White 35W=60W? It would be cheaper than buying the headlight unit and just as good.

Thanks for that Jarrah,

I was under the impression that because the headlight lens is plastic using anything more than 35W would melt the lens.

Strange how in my blue ttr's manual it says in the specs that the bulb is 55/60w, but you only seem to be able to get these bulbs in 35w. Is this just another weird Yamaha discrepancy? confuseOr can you actually pick up this particular type of bulb in 55/60w anywhere? Mine is not the h4 type it is the s2 type one.

Yep - that's the B3 or B4 fitting.

It could be that your manual is for the pre-2004 "Europe" model which had the speedo in kms.

The UK model shows 35/35W - see below:

A word of warning on bulbs .

I fitted one recently and it started to burn lamp .

When i changed it for a new one i noticed that the glass globe can be  larger or smaller depending on manufacturer  large one sits too close to the reflector and was overheating it .

They are brighter than the standard white OE headlight units but that is probably a lot to do with new reflector!

They aren't quite as good in comparison to the standard blue TTR headlight unit but, if your headlight needs replacing, they are a lot cheaper wink

And of course they look good!

Very easy to fit biggrin

Good warning! I recently bought a pack of 45/40W bulbs as they had the same fitment as the white OEs and thought they might serve as an upgrade. The fitting was correct but no way would the glass part of the bulb fit through the hole disbelief

Anyone know what they might fit so I can move them on?????
