New to me, ive just got a 2003 yamaha ttr250 , when you put a fully charged up battery connected and try the starter all i here is a slight click, i wondered what to look at to fix , this, the compression seems low when turning the engine over on the kickstarter with the spark plug in, its done under a 1000 miles and been stood for a few years, before i got it, advise please, thanks
if its just clicking , it most likely the solenoid, it's in behind the shock reservoir near the battery. ( it clicks when it pulls the contact down to connect the battery feed to the starter feed the two large terminals )
two ways to check .
safest way with a test light or meter there should power on one larger terminal, when it clicks it should have power on both large terminals.
other option make sure the bike is in neutral, and bridge the two large terminals with a screwdriver, it will spark a bit and the starter will turn (if the starter is ok)
there are a lot of cheap solenoids available, but the cheap ones don't last long or stick on damaging the starter.
if the compression is own after sitting a long time, it could be a stuck or corroded Valve, ( ive very rarely used my kick start as its close to useless the lever is actually zip tied to the frame as it tends to snag on my boots)
