Dominator Exhaust
Permalink

Hi, long time lurker. V. useful forum thanks for all the knowledge!

I've been after a replacement for my standard exhaust which had gone past ripe & took a risk on a new Polish dominator exhaust from eBay. I couldn't find any reports on them so I thought I'd offer my initial thoughts. Exhaust arrived today about 2 weeks after ordering, it's nice quality, certainly fair for the price anyway. Fitting is very straightforward & it clears the standard plastics nicely. I didn't weigh it but it's certainly slightly lighter than standard if a lot heavier than a carbon slip. I've got a full size MOT-grade number plate but it just pokes around that on my bike. Caveat here is that I haven't ridden further than round the yard but so far I'm really pleased the exhaust sounds (to my ear) rather nice, braap but not anti social, slightly louder than standard but still fine for legal, neighbourly green laning, it's certainly quieter than any of my mates' cheap slip-ons. Fuelling felt fine but I anticipate needing to run a bit richer. If anyone's interested I'll update more when I've had a good run out.

All info gratefully received. I have heard reports that they are a bit loud, but I bet they're not as antisocial as one of those orange 2-smokes!

It's definitely louder than stock, my stock was loose as a goose too so probably not a great comparison. What I will say about the new exhaust is it's quite a deep sound, db is only one part of the story & higher pitch sounds are usually a lot more obnoxious. Compare a 100db chainsaw to a 100db V8.

I might decide it IS too loud after a few hours in the saddle!

Hopefully these will be available soon

Specially made for Totally TTRs by the same company that makes our shorty header pipes biggrin

The prototype is being road tested at the moment.

Are these exhausts similar to the Dominator exhausts offered here? https://dominator.pl/en_GB/p/TTR-250-EXHAUST-Silencer-ROUND-1999-2006/128

These can be ordered with the hard silencer which are quiet but sacrifice some power as well.

Bran,  please share your final jetting settings when complete.  Are you using this with the shorty header pipe?

Thanks,

Jeff

Yeah they're the same but I could've saved myself about 30 quid if it I'd bought it direct through them! Will update on jetting once I've had a play around. I don't have a shorty header, I do have the snorkel delete. Bike is otherwise stock.

Happy Easter Jeff, I hope you're keeping well. Update on the jetting you asked about. The bike was running a bit lean as diagnosed by slight popping/crackle on overrun & surging on low constant throttle. I first checked for air leaks between the carb & the cylinder but all looked fine so I've pulled the carb & remembered I'd already upsized the jets to 142/50 from 140/48. I did this after the snorkel mod & free flow filter. I believe the next available main jet size is 145 (?) so I've instead moved the clip on the needle from its standard (middle) position to the richest position (bottom). I'm hoping this will help where the bike seemed to need it (i.e. between 1/4 & 3/4 throttle, it idles fine & pulls hard all the way to the stop). Hope to get some off road riding on private land today (we are in lock down so no further travel than land outside my back door). I'll report back. Cheers, Bran.

OK, update. Bike still surges, probably worse, slightly poor pick-up at lower rpm & throttle openings, smells rich. No overrun pops or crackles. Think I went too far on the needle, going to back it off one clip & give that a go. As before, bike starts, idles & runs at higher throttle openings very well. Problems are all around 1/4 throttle & lower constant openings. These issues were there before the exhaust change but have become more pronounced now. During strip down the carb looks great, all clean & no sign of any air leaks possible on intake side either side of the carb. Carb was rebuilt perhaps 600KM ago.

 Hi Jeff

My Phoenix exhausts are nothing like the Dominator ones. Mine have been designed and made in stainless steel and are not as loud as the Dominator ones.

Also there is no need to mess with the jettings, (fully tested on a standard bike, in the design process) so plug and play

Hope that helps.

Steve

Steve, I take it you haven't had any joy in sourcing 52 pilot jets?

No Only 50 or 54

Think Mossproof drilled some out? Maybe that could be an option for you?

OK, so to wrap up the Dominator exhaust question, the 54 pilot jet Steve sent works like a charm & the bike now runs beautifully BUT...a gentle run out two-up today to check on the livestock revealed that a) the cam action of folding out the pillion pegs fouls the exhaust & b) even a very light pillion depresses the rear suspension sufficiently that the exhaust fouls the rear tyre constantly. Not very good & suggests to me that the exhausts are made on a dimension only basis rather than actually trialed on a bike, should be better at the price in my opinion. For what it's worth, my conclusion is that anyone seeking an exhaust upgrade is better off buying Steve's dedicated TTR exhaust.

Thanks for the endorsement, that's why i spent ages on product development and getting it right smile

Glad the 54 made it run  good, are you able to make some mods to the exhaust? Do you find it to loud? (main gripe) of purchasers.

Only sensible mod is to ride solo! Exhaust is not too loud at all but maybe I'm a bit deaf? It's certainly still loads quieter than modern competition singles & we could have a conversation about what the rubbing sound whilst pootling along! My gripes are the missing mid mounting which makes it a bit weak if you ride hard, & the lack of design work leading to the clearance issues. Next big job is sorting corrosion on the frame by stripping everything back & powder coating, once I've got over the hassle & cost of that I'll think about one of your exhausts to finish everything off. Thanks for all the parts support, I wish all my vehicles & machines had this level of back-up!

Thanks for all the updates Bran. Useful information about what works and what doesn't is hard to come by, and bike forums are all more full of questions than answers!
