Very interesting.
Love the pressure on the roller test for friction, really clever.
He's got way too much time on his hands!
So rust prevention is my main priority, with minimal grit pick-up being the next factor, assuming assisiting lubrication inside the rollers is impossible if the o rings are doing their job.

interesting video Pete.
I notice the cost of chain lube because I buy it and my 2 kids spray on their chains. Liberally.

I make sure the chain is spun up on the bike stand or ridden after a wash then wd40'd before storage.
I use chain lube before a ride unless its sand, then I don't use it.

Always get good chain life.

Gear oil sounds good.

I use chain saw bar oil...
but it is quite tacky so must pick all sorts of grit..
