How many hours labour is that? 500 is a pretty megalithic cost! Valves are £58.25 each..

They said all day plus anything else that's potentially wrong in there. I thinking of buying another bike and having a go at it myself. I've got good basic machanical skills so could be possible!

Ps sorry about the multiple post, hadn't noticed a page 2!

Inlet valves £27 each plus P&p - see here

Ideally, whilst you have the head off, fit new timing chain, new valve stem oil seals, and new rings.

Have you had a look at the picture guide on removing a cylinder head Mike?

If you can work clean and methodically it would be a breeze to do the job if you have mechanical skills.

Plenty of help available if you get stuck.

Brian

But what really happened to the valves? And, more important, why? The repair depends on it, right?

Have you had a chance to get the cam cover off to check if it was a slipped timing chain that caused the problem Mike?

If it was (highly likely as not much else causes bent valves) then you need to check the timing chain for wear and that the tensioner is working OK.

Not had a good chase yet but I may do over the next week. Is there a guide to checking these things somewhere?

She's another TTR! Much better condition been used on road only for the last few years. Only issues to me is its got a full set of nobblies so need to get a new rear tyre, I've fitted the bar riser and high riser bars from the old bike and sorted out the cables so they are all good! Need to fit the bash gaurd underneath the engine and she's all kitted up ready to rock!

Hoping to get out next Tuesday. Looking for people to join me if anyone's about?

Oh and I've swapped the exhaust to the motad one from Brian also!

Nice!
Doesn't that cylinder mudguard (or whatever it's called) restrict airflow/cooling too much?

To be honest I don't know. I haven't seen any on any other TTR's (probably for that reason) I was thinking about removing it. I can see if it was caked in mud it will be a bit of an issue, maybe good in the summer to stop rocks at high speed though. The guy I have bought it from only rode on roads so he wouldn't have discovered an issue I guess.

Thinking of changing the rear tyre to a trials tyre too and maybe the front but will see how it goes with these, they are brand new but can't remember what tyre they are. I know there pretty aggressive looking nobblies!

They look like Mitas XT644 Army Special tyres to me. Good tyres. Already a cross between trials and enduro.

That guard would prob help stop water from spraying up to near your HT lead. And possibly up under the tank too. Also mud.
