Cam chain tensioner failure

Hi, I'm new to this great forum and have read all I can find about this problem...

History: friend'so bike, 2006, mileage unknown but has had a rough former life (London > Cape Town). Has been using oil. Piston rings replaced now, they were seized. Bike started at push of the button but almost immediate rattle stopped the trial run. It turns out that the cam chain tensioner had failed. When I removed it it seemed to have come apart, with bits dropping down. The spring retaining clip was still in place.

I will try to post a photo and was wondering if anyone has come across this before and if you can tell me whether the tensioner is complete as shown on the photo. I can' find a detailed view of a tensioner for comparison.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Marcel

That was unusually bad luck.

Yours looks complete.

I attach a couple of photos of tensioners which are the only ones I have. Do they help?

I couldn't resist including this photo from my "Black Museum" wink

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your prompt reply, I will be able to sleep better tonight, knowing that no parts are missing! The photos have indeed helped a lot. I went back to the failed tensioner and realised that because the plunger had come past the retaining clip (for whatever mysterious reason), all spring tension had gone. It probably won't be a good idea to try and re-tension the spring as there is no reference, so we'll order a new tensioner tomorrow (along with two new exhaust valves).

Thanks again,
Marcel

Mountains wants some parts (2 valves tensioner seals etc)to be sent out to Bulgaria, looks like a UPS job.

These are the parts:

Yamaha TTR250 2004 year, frame number: JYADG02X54A007478
B6 - 2 - 4GY-12121-00 - Valve, Exhaust - 2pcs ;
B6 - 7 - 33М-12119-00  - Seal, Valve Stem - 4pcs
B8 - 5 - 3GC-12210-10 - Tensioner assy, Cam Chain - 1pcs;
C8 - 27 - 90215-23265 - Washer, Lock - 1pcs;
C8 - 28 - 90179-18552 - Nut - 1pcs;

The last 2 items are obviously not essential

the guy who owns the bike (it was given to him by Lois Price) does not have much money and it would be really great if someone from the forum has useable second hand stuff, I can collect within a reasonable distance from Bristol

Otherwise where is the best place to get parts from in the UK?, preferably someone who can reliably pack up the parts and get them courierex out pronto? Or does everything have to come from Yamaha in Holland by post.

many thanks for your help

Chas.
