I recently purchased a 2006 TTR 250 which sat unused for years. I am not a very experienced mechanic. After cleaning the carb and jets, new tire, air filter, battery etc I started it and, like an idiot, ran it without even checking the oil. Soon I heard a loud noise from the engine sounding like a wrench tapping on it. I filled oil which was almost gone, and sound went away, but after a few minutes running it comes back, albeit not as loud. I am sure I have a serious problem now which will end in catastrophic failure if not immediately addressed. Any advice would be appreciated.
Unfortunately it doesn't sound to good mate. Engine with no oil means metal parts have ground against each other. Have you dropped the oil after you started it to see if there are any metal shavings in it?
That on its own can circulate around the engine and cause more damage.
You could of damaged the cylinder lining and piston. Afraid your going to have to take the engine apart.
Welcome aboard, sorry to hear of your engine problem. If an engine rebuild is something you do not have the confidence to attempt yourself, paying for someone to do it for you is likely to get expensive, so you may have some decisions to make.. Anyway good luck with it
Could be any number of things still, seized bottom end bearing is just one of the issues from oil starvation. On my mates 600 the big end bearing seized and the Con-rod shot through the front of the engine and set it on fire..

Hey Pete, I hope that's a worst case scenario, I'll make sure I check every time I ride from now on

ah yes I should have but now am beginning to tear it down. Don't like hunters? Don't you eat meat? I don't enjoy killing but she gave us a lot of good meat and at least she lived free and died fast unlike factory farmed animals.
Good luck with the engine rebuild Rob! I think Brian just mentioned because the pic looks like some sort of eery sacrificial witchcraft ceremony or something.. I love venison burgers, dunno about anyone else. At least you killed humanely.
You can stick any brand of 520 pitch chain on. Doesn't have to be Yamaha, Renthal and D.I.D are good too. Get an o-ring chain, they hold up much better. TTR's take around about a 116 link chain, may have to take a few links out if running smaller sprocket on back etc.
I couldn't work out the timing though. Is it regular or random?
It seemed sort of regular as if pressure built up and then "clack"!
Or maybe there is something loose that works its way around before hitting a moving part again...
Baffled
It would be a shame to tear the engine down to find it was something simple and unrelated to the oil starvation.
I would be tempted to take the clutch cover off and see if there is anything loose, broken or damaged in the timing chain area. Well within the novice mechanics capabilities!
A very weird noise. Does the noise disappear when you rev it? I would take the generator cover
and the clutch cover off and see if anything is amiss, start with the simple stuff
before progressing into the engine is always better, see if the engine can be turned by
hand and listen for any odd noises.
If it's not something loose in the engine, could it be the oil pressure relief valve clacking. My recollection is that its a big ball bearing and strong spring.

Now riddle me this Batman: I took off the clutch cover and found a few tiny pieces of rubber and metal under the screen. One of the pieces had a curious shape. It was about a millimeter across, and it looked like it was made out of a strip stainless steel bent into a U or rounded W shape. The piece actually looked like an upside down J and a U pushed together but it seemed to be broken as if maybe the original was something like this viewed on edge: www.qrg.northwestern.edu/projects/vss/docs/media/Communications/frequency.gif . Anyone know what this could be?
P.S. : I am hearing a loud intermittent clack at low rpms which caused me to investigate the situation further.
I don't have the time, money, patience, skill, tools, inclination and I'm sure a few more things to rebuild the motor. Maybe the kid can ide a few before the ****ing thing blows.
Remove the starter , thats something ive been thinking about for a while now. I have the Auzzy model with a kick start as well. My theory is the cost of repair to sprag or starter motor. i have limited mechanical knowledge so any repairs would have to be at a shop. Im thinking remove sprag and starter motor now then replace items when im in my 60s TTR has 18,000kms on it so far and im 55 yrs old. Maybe i can kick start for several years then use the push button later in life.
It does sound very like the noise that a worn sprag makes when you
shut down the engine and it kicks back against the starter as ttboof has
said. If it is that it must surely be worth doing as it doesn't sound too bad
otherwise.
no my phone could not capture them resolution to low. At this point to me removing starter or disconnecting sprag clutch does not seem as extreme as tearing the whole motor down because I will probably never get it back together in working order and I do not intend to spend hundreds of dollars.
good advice brian . is it possible to remove ghe round cover and remove the idler gear start and run the bike to see if the noise goes before going right into the sprag clutch removal .
might be an essy option to dignose the problem further
Might get a few different responses. I'm from the bush. And have two choices if the bike is a long term thing fix the sprag and use the starter
Or if it's just a basher and your willing to just take a punt hope on and ride. If your lucky any further pieces end up in the bottom of the sump if it falls apart a lot of noise then eventually she dies .
one very small piece looked like it could be from the thin strip of bent sheet metal holding the "teeth" in. It was so small though, like a millimeter. Soon as I get some gaskets in the mail I will put it back together fill it up with oil this time and fire it up to see what it sounds like.
If you have the top of the engine of and have bits of metal that could have gone in the bottom of the engine. I would suggest flushing the engine out, as them little bits of metal can cause more problems! I learnt the hard way
