Decided to go with the air box mod as i was curious to see what difference it made. I already have a 52.5 pilot jet fitted and a 55 pilot jet incase it was needed but it seems to run great with the 52.5.
The new hole in the air box measures 3.25 inches x 1.75 inches. Iv'e mounted the snorkel in a piece of flat plastic incase i wanted to reverse the mod.
The rubber around the hole is car door seal.
I can refit the snorkel if i decided to reverse the mod. There's a 10mm lip left around the hole that i could bond the snorkel to.
I took the bike out for a spin and done a plug chop, all seems well with the mods iv'e done .
I think it revs slightly quicker Pete but probably a mixture of the recently fitted pilot jet and airbox mod. Think i'll notice more when out on the lanes.

Went out for a few hours this afternoon and there is a nice improvement. It seems to pull better in the lower revs then revs a bit quicker through the rev range.

Haven't touched the pipe/muffler (US) but I did cut up the airbox and remove the snorkel and add twinair filter and I think it makes a real difference, especially at altitude. Take off the seat and rev it up with the snorkel in, it sucks like a vacuum cleaner, I figure that can't be ideal.
I have yet to hear from a US rider/US bike who has fully uncorked (with new pipe) and rides above 5000 ft-- I'd love to hear the results/specs if someone has done this. I don't see how you could go with a big main jet without being too rich (Jarrah's 52.5/150/Q4 set up notwithstanding). Guess I'm too cheap to buy a new pipe to play with, and/or just too old for the noise.
If you're a mile high or more this might be an interesting thread: http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t56242227/jets-for-high-elevation/. The guy from CO doesn't say if he cut up the box or replaced the pipe but I assume yes and no, respectively (Dave from Colorado?).
