mirror arm corrosion prevention
Permalink

the chromed mirror arms on my 2011 model were going rusty due to chrome pitting caused by being struck by all manner of abrasive matter thrown up by motorway traffic. I had considered purchasing mirrors that had stainless steel arms. [ are they available ] but a thought struck me that heatshrink tubing would be the answer. it comes in a range of colours and the 16mm size will with a bit of pulling and pushing slide right up the arm. then you just have to heat and shrink it being careful not to damage the mirror head. to treat the corrosion I got a tall glass bottle that was wide enough in the neck to accommodate both mirror arms and filled it with rust convertor [ phosphoric acid ]. leave long enough to dissolve the corrosion, rinse with hot soapy water and either paint the arms with anti corrosive paint or use some sort of product like fish oil or tectyl to prevent the rust from reactivating under the heatshrink. you do not want any moisture getting trapped under the tubing either so make sure you properly seal the ends.

Good, detailed way of preventing rust spoiling the looks.

Thanks for posting.

However, it wouldn't work on my TTR because the arms are painted black. hmm

Besides - they're usually covered in trail mud. biggrin

Yes a good idea. I thought the mirror arms was black anyway unless that was the UK models.

The standard UK TTR250 mirrors have black stems and I haven't noticed any rusting on them biggrin

Presumably you had to buy the extra adapter (with LH thread) to fit the RH mirror Locky?
