Plating a TTR250 (USA)

I am in the process of attempting to make my 2001 TTR street legal. Being a novice when it comes to electronics I thought I would ask for your help. I bought a hydraulic brake switch (for the rear brake). The original taillight has 3 wires blue, black, and yellow. The tusk wiring diagram was not much help.http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/docs/Brake%20switch%20instructions.pdf  Do you know which colored wire is the brake and which is the tail light (I am assuming black is ground). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Ruger and welcome to the forum!

Does this thread answer your question?

Thanks Brian,

I think that would mean the two brake switch wires would both connect to the yellow wire. One to the harness and one to the tail light assy. Then black to black and blue to blue.

The confusion stems from a previous post http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t50132515/making-my-us-ttr-street-legal/ were the OP mentioned using a relay when connecting the brakes.  Ideally I would like to be able to have all the street legal equipment off on the trail and on when driving on the street. But having no experience with electronics it is a bit daunting

I did the same thing a few months back. I don't remember exactly which color wires went where. But I do remember that it was an easy process. Do u have the tusk harness too? Or just the brake switch?

In AZ you only need is a headlight, tail light, brake light, and a mirror. So I  thought I would meet the requirements now and get it plated then do blinkers, horn etc so if I move it would be easier to get DMV approved in another state.

Did you do the complete tusk harness with lights?

Hi Ruger, Just saw your PM but thought I'd reply here.

It was a while back since I did that work, but looking at the US TTR service manua,l it shows the yellow as the brake light & a green wire as the low beam.

Neither is connected to the harness as indicated by the arrows:

I wasn't sure if you were in the US, but as you are, your bike should be the same as mine.

The lighting switch is #19 on the diagram & I added my new hi/lo switch right where the yellow wire comes out to feed #20 (headlight) & #18 (brake/tail light). The unused yellow wire on #18 feeds the brake light section of that bulb & should be fed from the hydraulic switch that you bought. That switch, in turn, needs +12V fed to it from the light switch.

As you can see I am not skilled with drawing programs but I can try to do a sketch if you need it.

Thank you for the tips. I understand it better now.  I have ordered the parts and will attempt to do the wiring job when in gets a little cooler. It gets uncomfortable to work when it is 114 degrees. No A/C in the garage.

In OR and CA you'll have problems, and I suspect same in some other states. CA I believe actually applies the emissions rules to motorcycles, so you're probably screwed there without lots of tinkering, and they will probably refuse anyway because the TTR is not factory-designated as dual sport (so far as I know). OR doesn't apply actual emissions tests but your bike has to have come with an "on road approved" sticker of some sort. I think both OR and CA will refuse to register the TTR even if plated in another state. NV has same rules I believe. Maybe the UK version is factory or dealer designated street legal?

But once you're plated in AZ you're legal to ride in all states anyway, maybe just keep it that way.
