1995 OE Brake light wiring troubles

Ok seeing if anybody out there can help me get the brake light to work. So I got the bike and it never had the bulb fitting or wiring. So bought a light fitting which came with three wires. Ground, high and low beam pretty simple really. Now searched the bike for where to wires this thing into. Finally found what looks to be the spot. This is where my dramas have started. Firstly there is 4 wires available to use which with a quick check with the test light they seem to be two separate pairs. And now it also seems that the left hand indicator has jumped in on the issue act. I tried connecting two grounds togethers and the other two wires. Brake light was permanently on as was the lh indicator.

Will post up some pics that may help sort the issue for someone who knows.

You have found the right wires but the connectors are missing. These should be the Japanese bullet type to match the standard TTR connectors.

The blue wire feeds the number plate light and the tail light - constant live with the ignition on. Should have a double female connector.

The black wire is the earth and should have a double connector for the number plate light and tail/brake light.

The yellow wire is for the brake light and should have a single female connector.

They have nothing to do with the indicator wiring.

Hope that helps?

Brian

Now that does help a bit will have to source some connectors. My only issue is what is the second ground for? The light I bought is an aftermarket option which didn't have the correct plug on it as it is. Hoping the fact I got this option because of the genuine item being 170 dollars doesn't end up in having to still get the genuine item to get it going.

There shouldn't be a second black earth wire at that point. Perhaps it belongs to the LH indicator and has been cut back? TBH, it doesn't matter as far as your current project is concerned. Use either!

This is what your loom connectors should look like:

It is important to use the correct 3.9mm "Japanese" bullet connectors on the TTR - available from Vehicle Wiring Products. I have seen a lot of crimped terminals used on TTRs and (a) these aren't a good fit and (b) they usually pull off with no effort cry

By the way, welcome to the forum! Don't forget to introduce yourself here when you have a spare moment wink

Thanks,

I think that would mean one wire from the brake switch goes to the yellow wire from the tail light assy and the other brake switch wire goes to the yellow wire on the harness. Then blue to blue and black to black (tail light assy to harness).

Part of the my confusion stems from a  previous post by TDVT dated 7/23/12 http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t50132515/ making-my-us-ttr-street-legal/. He describes using a relay for the brake light/ tail light set up. The documentation from Tusk (brake switch supplier) doesn't mention a relay just a wire to wire set up. Ideally I would like to have all the street legal electronics run through the headlight on off switch so when I'm trail riding I can keep them off and turn the headlight on when on the street.

Just happened to see this.

With the US TTRs, it is a bare-bones setup for the lights; just hi-beam, the tail light & an on/off switch on the handlebars that will shut them off.

I fed my expanded lighting (hi/lo, tail/brake) from the factory on/off switch but added the relay to power the headlight only, not the brake/tail.

So in the end, I have the hi/lo switch I added, plus the factory on/off so I can turn off my lights as you would like to do. If your bike doesn't have a lighting on/off switch, you could add a regular toggle switch in the lighting feed from the key.

Hope that makes sense.
