Isn't there a bush in there that wears out and needs replacing now and then ?

I couldn't find it in the manual

It is a collar, see part number 19. below-

It is not that likely to wear but if it was worn it would cause a floppy sidestand issue because the collar will be a loose fit in the frame. Something to try before going ahead with this. However, it is likely to wear the frame along with the collar. If the sidestand collar, frame or spring is worn I can see how this would help though.

The most common cause of a ''wobbly'' sidestand is the frame wearing out (and the sidestand mounting point) where the sidestand contacts the frame and a washer is sometimes needed as the spacer now is the wrong length for the worn frame. Another solution would be to shorten the collar and bent the sidestand in with a hammer until the collar fits.

A previous owner of my bike fitted another spring inside the original which has stiffened up the stand and its no longer 'floppy' - the two springs are separated by a rubber sleeve - looks like a piece of innertube.

Hi Dave

The later TTRs had the double spring as a standard fitting. The early TTRs had the single spring. Not sure why Yamaha made the change confuse

My OE model did not have the spring mounting plate shown on Brian's picture. It came without it as per the US spec (it seems from looking at the Partzilla exploded diagram above). The spring goes on the frame spring lug (if that's what you want to call it?).

It's now fitted to my 2000 model, see picture below-

about 3 years ago i added a small piece of angle steel it slips in under the frame and tucks the stand in a bit when its up and has reduced the flopping around .

just me being a bit over the top but its helped
