New 1999 TTR250 owner/Fix up Project

Hi, I am new to the TTR as I just bought a 99 TTR-250 Blue enduro a couple months ago im looking into fixing it up. I would like some opinions on what i should look at for replacments, small stuff. The bike works fine for now.
First off ill be changing the chain and sprockets, i think ill be going 13/51-52. As for the chain i dunno much, iv seen chain and sprocket kits on ebay. Check it out here i would love your feed back:

What ells are some things i can change that are essential or just good to change, i dunno much about bikes but im willing to learn. Ill be replaing the brakes and some cables and barrings ect, or what ever shows up that needs to be new.

Im also wanting to paint it all black, so im looking for some good tips on sanding the plastic and some good paint that works well, wont scratch to much and looks good. I had a problem with the plastic gas tank cracking and i sealed it with some fiberglass resin.  So its just a blob line of fiberglass resin across the cracks. I will be taking it all off and actually fiberglassing the tank so it looks good and i can paint it. What are your thoughts on that, so far the resin is working great not leaking gas anymore. So my theory is that if i fiberglass it with the same resin it should work. 

Also will parts for a 2000-2006 TTR work on a 99 i see allot of stuff on ebay ect that says for 2000-2006 TTRs? So i would love anyones opinions on this stuff and any tips you got would help allot.

 Hope you get some tips for your questions.

 BTW- W H A T !, you want to paint a beautiful BlueTTR to Black? confuse HA HA:) -I only own/ride Blue bikes myself.

 My Grandson's KTM is Orange, but I just wrench on it, I am WAY too big to ride it, Kinda makes me blue that I can't!biggrin


 All I know for sure is, a kick start install is possible as I have seen some information here on this site for that. Thinking about that myself, as I think it is silly not to have one on a dirt bike. I think I will probably be stranded by NOT having one someday. Might try a "SEARCH" for that. I saw something (by Brian I think) showing how to keep kick-starter out of the way with some sort of rubber band. I guess it gets in the way or won't stay in place and it is bothersome to some folks.

Hey Mashall,

Chain & sprockets

The link that you left didn't work so I cannot comment on it.

My personal choice for brands names is Renthal, Talon, Volar (have one fitted ATM), Moose, DID.

My personal favourite chain is an O-ring chain, made from any of the above brands.

My personal favourite combo for road is 14/48 or 13/49. For offroad it is 14/51 or 13/51.

Things to check or replace.

Chain sliders, lube or replace cables, carb clean, air filter, oil change, cam chain & guides??

Maybe someone can fill in any missing info?

 

Paint for plastics

There is not a lot of solutions to painting plastics. You could use a plastic primer (like Plasti-kote, than use a vinyl/plastic paint to finish. You can use clear coat if you like but it may crack?

Getting paint to stick to plastic is not something that comes naturally, it does not like to stick & tends to crack or flake. Good luck though.

Fuel tank leak

My newest solution to this is to use a soldering iron to ''weld'' the crack back together. First weld the crack, than use a little extra plastic over the top. You can use blue plastic if you don't want it to be noticable. This works a treat & has already fixed the leak in my wr400 plastic fuel tank.

1999 parts interchangable?

If yours is blue, any parts fro 1999-2013 will work just fine. There is only slight changes to models earlier than 99 but most are interchangable. If you want to know more on this see HERE.
