My chain is a Renthal O ring chain. Technically, the O rings supposedly retain the inbuilt lube, so oiling is only to lubricate the sprocket contact and the bit of the links that are exposed. I lubricate the chain by removing the top run chain guard and filling a cut off Fairy bottle with used engine oil. I firstly clean the chain of excess mud and with a toothbrush liberally brush the top of the chain with oil. I spin the rear wheel whilst oiling and when it's all done I get an old piece of cloth and wipe the excess off. I then replace the guard and leave the chain till the next run. I usually do this straight after a run, when the chain is warmish - it helps the oil get into the links. By wiping the excess it doesn't splatter the tyre very much. Besides, the tyre usually gets splattered with mud and grass on top of the oil so who cares? Martyn
back in the 70's I used to use DUCKHAMS CHAIN LUBE which came in a grease form in a sort of biscuit tin that you put on your kitchen stove to melt and then just drop the chain in. after a short period take it out with a wire coathanger and hang up outdoors on the clothes line to drip dry. wipe off any excess and refit. can you still buy that stuff ?.

if you can find it .its only for non oring chains .thd idea of submerging it is to go right through the links .
if you have an oring chain i only use wd40 after i wash it to keep the surface rust at bay
I use a 50/50 mix of Scottoil and chainsaw oil. On my other bikes i use this mix in Scottoilers but on the TTR i'll just use it from an oil can. When i run out of Scottoil i'll use engine oil.
