Hi all,I bought the bike with 6000 kms on it.It was running perfectly,no coughing spluttering,no flat spots,ect...I was quite suprised at the power it put out(having just sold a Wr450F 2016 model),and thought it was quite grunty/fast compared to a WR250R I had many years ago.
When I bought the bike,I don't think the guy had used it much over the last 5 years, mainly sitting in his shed,so it would not easily start cold.Eg:full choke made it rev for 2 seconds then die.The owmer told me to use no throttle,no choke at all,and it would always start maybe 4th or 5th go.Once the bike was running and engine warm,it started on the button within a second. So warm start is perfect, cold start was miserable.
Fast forwad,I put new spark plug in(old one looked ok not oily or white),ran abit of "Liquid Moly fuel system cleaner/conditioner through a full tank of fuel, cleaned air filter. Now it starts either fisrt or second go(no choke needed) without fail.As I said the bike runs like an absolute champion. There is no rattle or ticking noises at all,it just sounds like it's running perfectly.I asked the guy I bought it from and asked if he checked the valve clearances,ect..He said no.So am assumming this bike has?? never had it valves adjusted,at all.Is it possible that a bike that is meant to have it's valves checked every 1000 kms,yet now sits at 6000 kms (unchecked valves),is still in perfect tolerances??
If there are no ticking noises,no rattles, cold starting issue resolved, and everything running perfectly, shouldn't I just leave it alone and enjoy the ride??
I,ve owned alot of bikes before, and always had them do the valves according to specs(some big V-Twins that are notorious for needing valves adjusted apparently ),and have never ,ever needed one adjustment,EVER.Yet have paid big money only to be told "everything is in spec,no adjustment needed".
Had a mate many years ago (who was a motorcycle mechanic) that said it was a crock of bull**** that valves need to be looked at at the intervals quoted by manufactuers. He said if you are racing them and putting the engine under maximun strain, then yes, there may be a need for it.He said for the average rider who does not race/flog his bike,it is completely unnesesary. He said if your valves are out you will notice a lack of performance and ticking noises. He said otherwise,"DON'T ****ING TOUCH THEM",don't worry and enjoy your ride, unless you like throwing money at bike shops.
Just curious as to the opions and experience of people who have owned this specific bike.
I have very rarely had to adjust (reshim) the valves on a TTR unless I have had to do other work like rebores and the engine has been running badly. Even then not big step changes.
Checking them is quite quick and easy, adjusting them is more time consuming and fiddly.
6000km - as your mate suggests, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
