Ttr 250 inner clutch basket wear
Permalink

Hi all,

Roberta and I shipped the poor ttr250s back from South America, it really wasn't worth it from a financial perspective but I do like my one!

I am just starting on refreshing it enough to ride again before next year tidying it up properly.

I was just replacing the stretched cam chain and noticed some strange wear on the inner clutch baskets "towers". Will replace both parts obviously as they are shot but I wondered if anyone has seen anything like this, I certainly haven't? It's strange as only the springs come close to them!

The bolts were tight, everything was in spec when I changed the plates 4000 miles ago (max).

I'll take a look to see if I have a decent 6 plate clutch basket, if not I'll be looking around for another and obviously check Steve's shop.

My clutch has always felt stiff even with std springs, clean and wel routed clutch cable. It's also very on and off, hopefully the new basket will sort this out!

On another subject I have Just stuck a Chinese sprag clutch purchased in Brazil. I have only gone OEM so far, but Robbie's has went around 15,000 miles without a sound so for me far better than the OEM actually... Fingers crossed.PXL_20241018_124915356.jpg

It's the lugs on the clutch plates that locate between the basket "fingers" and rattle. 30,000 miles since the big bore - I'd say that's normal wear for a bike running heavy loads in arduous conditions. Wonder what the expected life of a dirt bike is?
You could file the ridges down, which would make the clutch operation smoother, although there would obviously be more slop in the take-up of drive.

Simon got there before me!

The on/off nature of the clutch action is likely to be the plates sticking momentarily in the ridges of the basket's fingers. It use to be common practice back in my enduro days to always file the ridges off when rebuilding the clutch.

Well done on completing your mammoth adventure! Are you going to write a book/blog/YouTube video of the whole thing? I would love to see thatbiggrin

the lack of a cush drive in the rear hub, is really hard in the transmission and clutch if doing a lot of on road riding.
