replaced ignition pick up

My ignition  pick up has gone open circuit.  I've ordered one on ebay that I think I can fit to the existing stator/wiring.  Being Chinese if it works I might sell the ttr because I can't trust it 

Tried to buy a complete stator but apparently not available any more 

Has anyone got a good fix

 Thanks for the  info  unfortunately  the stator is OK it's just the pick up that's gone 

Will email them and see if they have pick up coils

Hi Les

Sorry to hear of your problem. I am sure I read recently either here or on the TTR250 Riders FaceBook Group a post from an owner who had just successfully replaced just his pickup coil but darned if I can find it. Anyone else remember it and know where it is?

BTW, if anyone else needs the complete stator with pickup then Steve has one in stock here

I'm sure I read that as well .but can't find it either

The one I have on the way from China looks ok  and at $81 delivered its got to be worth a try 

Even if it's just a short term solution

I've checked the resistance at the plug under the tank if I'm lucky it's a broken wire .will check it when it cools off a bit just went out side the car is saying it's 41 deg c  outside so a tad warm in the shed no doubt 

Will report back once it's running again

Couderc Jean Louis seems to know his way around pickups and stators. He runs a fleet of TT250s in Laos for his trail riding business.

Search for him in the TTR240 Riders Group on Facebook if you want to make contact. This is the unit he posted up.

The one i ordered arrived today  tested it its 200 ohms  which is a good start now to find a bit of time to fit it

Fitted the pick up this morning turns out to be ab easy job .

But the lh gasket broke so can't try it out as yet

Checked the old pick up definatly faulty . To pull the wires through the grommet I put a bit of heat shrink on the ends of the wires and a bit of oil went through no worries . The wires were tight in the grommet but I put a bit of heat shrink on the wires where they go through the grommet just to be sure

No I have to wait to see if it works

The pick up only took 6 days to get here from China looks like the gasket from Sydney will take at least two weeks .still waiting patiently 

Could have driven to the place in three hours to pick it up .

Put it partly back together and it started no worries 

Nice to hear it run again 

Pic of the wires connected temporarily unill I finish it . Too hot in the shed might be a night time job

Just started striping some of the wiring from my bike in order to replace old and ‘frozen’ I.e. aged,  number plate wiring. 


The only way it would have been too hot in my garage here in the UK would have been if it was on fire 🔥 😜

 its nice having warm days but the shed gets a bit too warm when the temp outside ranges from 32deg to 45 deg

replaced ignition pick up

just a recap 

the bike gave a bit of a cough on its last ride which i though that was odd then forgot about it. 

the next time i went to start the ttr  it had no spark. 

i worked through the workshop manual. 

and found the pickup was open circuit, should be 200 ohms. 

Yamaha only sell the pick-up and stator as a complete unit. 

i bought a pickup off ebay for the ttr and it was easy to fit. 

with it hooked up it has spark both ways but only runs if connected as my last pic 

will finish putting the bike back together and try it on the weekend.

 

a point to remember the stator only charges the battery the only ignition related part of the assembly is the pick-up. hope this helps someone down the track if it happens to them.

Three rides and 600ks it's working well . Just like it always has .

It's done over 80 000ks so prob time it started playing up 

Just need me fixed now I can't balence very well two years in and the doctors can't work out why . I'm hoping ttr therapy will sort it out biggrin

I've just got some spark problems in Colombia all of a sudden, I think it sounds like my pick up is an issue too so I'm glad to see that you have a few values written down. Thanks for posting about it, hopefully we find a replacement part.


Roberta ttr raid has 200ohms

The pick-ups are on ebay  all have the same picture even the dealers . Can be bought a lot cheaper . About 1.5 hour job the longest part was getting the b@b bash plate off and on

Hope it helps . The pick up physical size is common to a lot of bikes the resistance is different and suited to each system .

I have found a genuine suzuki dr650 pick up coil in Medellín, Colombia for £48 that was the same shape and resistance (200ohms) so I'm fitting that now. 

 

The Suzuki part number is 32160-37410.

It seems to work well now, I guess the part was on its way out because in my mind it rides better, maybe the spark wasn't as strong before!

good to hear its fixed, mine seems to go a bit better as well the pick up  might muck the timing around a bit .
