We are currently in North Brazil and oil consumption has just shot up dramatically. my ttr350 only visually smokes under faster acceleration for an overtake but is burning so much oil now! I did about 250 miles yesterday at 50mph and burn't around 600ml 😵💫
Starts incredibly easily but the Kickstarter feels a little less resistance than normal, not that it's ever been super hard to kick over.
I'm pretty sure the piston and valves with be like chucks of coal by now as it's been burning a bit all the time but these last 3 days it's been much much worse.
Like I said, visually the same for smoke, a bit at start up and harder acceleration but that's it
The only thing I can think of is piston rings which Is a pain!
This follows Robbie's bikes cam chain tensioner spring breaking and bending 4 valves and ruining the cam chain. Not the best of luck!
As you know, no easy fix for piston rings. If there is a chance its related to the crankcase breather system (ie. frequently draining the breather air separator drain tube), then try some oil that is less prone to blow-off vapors. I reluctantly tried some 10w-30 synthetic motor oil for ATV's (JASO2). I experienced higher than usual oil consumption while riding at WOT through mountain roads. I replaced my 10w-40 non-synthetic motorcycle oil with 10w-30 ATV oil because I needed oil and it was the only oil I could find in the area. My oil consumption stopped. That was a year ago. I haven't had to drain the air separator drain tube since then.

I've been riding at 34 degrees minimum for the last 2 months and probably will for the next 2 months so currently I'm running 20w50. We are going to cut Brazil short, get to a city and come up with a plan. :)
Im not sure at these temperatures thinner oil will help but I understand the point your making, change isn't bad maybe synthetic will hold out longer? :)
I've found I have to empty the separator more often using synthetic oil going to switch back. There not ttrs but going to a thinner oil reduced oil burning on my subaru outback and forester I'm thinking the rings can scrape it back easier
I've ordered some rings to Brazil, import tax is more than 100% of the product value plus postage, so I'll end up paying £220 for a set of rings, heart breaking haha hopefully it'll be a proper job complete and be good even when home :)
