Curious what oil I should be using in my bike? It’s a 2003 Yamaha TTR 250. Owners manual says 10w-30 or 20w-40 (depending on outside temperature?) I know a lot of you guys on this forum are using 10w-40 semi-synthetic. I recently spoke to a Yamaha Service representative and he said he wouldn’t use 10w-40 with how old the bike is. He recommended I use 20w-40 in the summer, but all I can really find for 20w-40 is related to marine engines, does that matter? I live in climate with hot summers (90-100°F) and semi-cold winters (15-25°F). Curious what you guys think? Also, semi-synthetic, full-synthetic, etc? Thanks!

10w-40 motorcycle oil is fine. Never had an issue. I really like Shell Rotella T4 15w-40 oil. Its designed for heavy equipment, has zinc for older engines, and has the JASO specification for wet clutches.
I only use synthetic to minimize blow-off for long duration, high rpm runs.
Whatever is available at Walmart. Their Super-Tech is fine. They also carry Valvoline. Most of my riding is strictly off-road, single track woods riding. So I change oil every 20 hours which is about 200 miles. The bike seems happy with this.
these bikes \ engines run on 10w40 15w40 semi sync the art of it is change it regular 500 miles my option or more regular clean new oil is the answer john
Hi,
I run mine on 10W40 full Mineral Yamalube Engine Oil which was recommended by mates at Yamaha New Zealand.
I guess they would recommend Yamalube because they sell it !
Cheers
