New trail rider & Raid owner!

Good evening- long time lurker first time caller poster!

I'm Nev and this is me and my '94 Raid:

I bought it late last year from a bloke in Wales who also had a blue tanked TTR as my path into trail riding. Since then, i've done my DAS and spent quite a few wet weekends out on the lanes of Lancashire and Yorkshire learning the craft of off road riding! It's an absolutely brilliant bike, i've ridden both a DRZ and KTM450, but on the TTR I feel so much more at home!

It's always burned a bit of oil (and smelt pretty oily as my riding buddies keep telling me), but in the past 100 miles or so it's become even heavier than usual- oil has become black in 150 miles and i'm pretty sure i could pump up the tyres with the amount of blow by that it has! So i've bitten the bullet and put myself down for a 350 kit. A good excuse if there ever was one! Steve from Totally TTRs nudged me to sign up, so here I am.

I'm booked to go away to do some trail riding on the IOM during the TT practice week at the end of May, so with plenty of work commitments between now and then it's going to be a tight one! Hopefully I won't be on the back of someone else's bike!

Any guidance on rejetting or carb options would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Nev.

Hi Nev

Glad you started to post up, helpful bunch on here

Soory I didn't respond to your question about the carb, so I though I would post here. I have a 147/54 jet combo and the bike runs perfectly, though I can't remember where I moved the needle clip to no 54 is a bit larger than the others owners have done i think, but not running rich, which makes me think i moved the needle.

Sure the others will let you know their jet sizes. Seems there isn't a set point we all got together, which confuses the hell out of me confuseconfuse

Hey Steve, thanks for the guidance. As you say, there's plenty of info out there but perhaps no definite convergence of numbers. If I aim for those jets, then at worst it's a needle adjustment to get it just right!

I'll get the engine out this week and have it off for machining next week! Exciting.

Welcome to the forum, and TTR ownership Nev!
There is a big bore jetting thread here:

ttr250.activeboard.com/t66307913/the-big-bore-carb-jetting-thread-325-and-350cc/

With your standard exhaust and presumably standard airbox, which is how I developed 350 #1, I found 48/140 worked nicely (and I used an afr gauge to check). Jets in unusual sizes are getting hard to source so I would try 50/137. Ideal needle position can vary depending on the state of the 1993 carb!

Ready by May seems a bit ambitious to me, but if your machinist pulls his finger out, and you have all the parts ready to go, it's doable. Good luck!

Please take note of the instructions in the kit regarding trial fit (starter motor clearance) and cleaning of the barrel etc, as well as running-in procedures etc.

Keep us informed of your progress,

Simon.

Thanks for the link, and the tips on jetting. As you guessed, standard air box and exhaust, yes. Carb so far has been sweet as a nut, bit who knows what will lurk inside once that particular can of worms is opened!

May is ambitious yes, but as it is currently it isn't going to last the journey to the ferry let alone a few days riding, so better get cracked on. I suppose I could have gone down the rebore route, but where's the fun in that?

Loud and clear on instructions for running in and clearances, wouldn't want to ruin it! I'm running in a new bike at the moment and it's so tempting to wind it up, but I'm being a good boy!
