New owner of a 2005 TTR

Hi Guys, i bought Dave's 2005 TTR that was for sale on here.

Im a first time TTR owner, bought the bike to do some green laning and get back into offroad riding.

I also have a BMW F650 Dakar which i am hoping to do some longer trips to wales, scotland and europe incuding some TET riding in the next few years.

As you can see it didn't take me long to take the TTR to bits! It was a bit neglected with lots of rusty siezed bolts and a lot of mud everywhere. Plan is to give it a good service and grease up, fix the broken bits, replace fixings for stainless and use a bucket of copperslip on re-assembly so it is nice and easy to come apart to clean after my rides!

I have a rather long list of items from Totallyttrs to order this week!

The forum looks great with some really good information on the bikes and knowledge base.

Im sure i will have a few questions for you!

Tom

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum!

The TTR is such an easy bike to work on, I am sure you will enjoy your mini-resto

You mention using copperslip but my understanding is that it shouldn't be used with aluminium. I only recently discovered this and I wish I could recall the source! Anyhow, I now use Sealey's SCS103 Aluminium Anti-Seize Compound. Anyone else have a view on this?

Brian

PS It would be great to get updates and photos as you go along!

BMW mechanics will warn you against ally antiseize, but I can't remember the details - I was researching something regarding head and valve guide work on an R80.

So that's 2 vague, unsubstantiated and opposing comments already. This should be on Thumpertalk

My only comment would be don't get it on your skin. It doesn't come off!

I just did a quick Google and there are opposite opinions as you say Simon!

I found a technical paper that says "Copper grease should be applied when mounting components to a dissimilar material, i.e. aluminium and/ or titanium framesets with steel or alloy components. This will help prevent both galvanic corrosion and galling"

It is easy enough to find others recommending NOT to use it confuse

So who really knows?
