Kia Ora Folks!

I'm a bit of an imposter here as I actually ride a 450exc (sorry!). Having said that my partner has just bought an awesome '95 TTR250 Raid. It's in really good nick and we've already had a few good rides on it.

The reason for me joining this forum is I'm looking for some advice around luggage. The bike came with a rack that I've identified as an ttr specific mmotorack.

https://www.mmotoracks.com/product/whole-welded-luggage-rack-system-for-yamaha-tt-250r-raid

Personally I have a the Kriega OS range for my bike but keen to get some luggage for my partner as we have a 3 week trip planned for later in the year. Lockable hard luggage obviously has some advantages so not against going down that route.

The thing that's giving me pause is it looks like the rack has one smaller and one bigger luggage frame so it's not like we can buy a set and expect it to fit (or maybe we can, I'm not sure).

Does anyone have experience with these racks? Are they commonly used for the Raids? Any recommendations on where to look?

Sorry for the bombardment, nice to meet you all :D

Richard

Welcome to the forum!

I've not come across these racks before. I would be against hard luggage for several reasons: On a light weight rack like that, the leverage of boxes will cause quite a bit of flex to the rack and subframe, whereas with some soft throwovers some of the load can be shared by the seat/top rack with the sides acting more as supports to stop things flapping. Hard luggage is heavy, even empty, and frequently not as waterproof as it should be. Soft bags can also be rolled/strapped tight to reduce size if partially filled. Finally, on the trail, soft bags are far more forgiving on the legs if they get trapped in a gully or in an "off".

I use Andy Strapz roll tops, which are a slightly cheaper version of Adventure Spec Magadans. Enormous when necessary, and easily shrinkable with an overstrap when nearly empty. Chris Scott created quite a useful thread over on Horizons Unlimited:

Safe travels!

Hi Richard,
How about Ventura from Dold Industries in Hamilton ?
Won’t fit the Racking that you have but it’s tried and true stuff.

Sorry, the link I meant to add was for a luggage comparison page here:
