Hi Everyone,

Was visiting a friend of a friend in our old hometown and during a “Guided Tour” of his Garden I spotted a 1981 Montesa Cota 200 lurking in the darkness.

Just had to ask what that was all about and was told that he bought it out from Scotland, when he emigrated to NZ in 1991 and was thinking of selling it, so I asked how much. He had no idea, so we Googled it. Seems a good one sells for upwards of £2500 in the UK. I stepped back and said that that was way too much for an old Pensioner like me. We went back to Beer Drinking and out of the blue he said that if I was really interested and I promised to treat it well, I could have it for NZ$1000 (about £500). We shook hands on it, so now I own it ! 

He was a Marine Engineer before he Retired and the bike looks in really good condition and runs well. I have never done Trials Riding so not sure what I will do with it but will fiddle about with it and I can see that it needs a few Parts, like a new Seat.

Spare Parts for a 41 year old Spanish Lady (named “Tessa” now) could be rare and expensive but Google points me to a Company called Inmotion in England who seem to have a good range of Parts and the prices are what I would expect.

The reason for this message is to ask if anyone out there in the Totally TTR World knows of any other sources.

I know that this is way off the TTR subject and my TTR won’t become neglected but now has a “Stable Mate.”

Inmotion would probably be your best bet for Montesa parts, have a look at trialsbikebreakersuk.com if you need any other help with parts I was until recently Chairman of a classic trials club I can ask around for you as a few guys ride Montesa’s. Have a look at redroseclassictrials.com

Thanks very much for that info Neil. I’ll certainly have a look at those two websites.

I knew someone in the Totally TTR World would have some info on the subject.

I‘m looking forward to “spinning my spanners” on it.

Can’t quite figure out why it’s a Cota 200 when its 175cc but I don’t speak Spanish so ....... Not much call for Speaking Spanish in New Zealand.

Well the Fantic 200 trials was actually 156cc iirc. Trials bike marketing has always been a bit opaque I think!
My first trials bike was a Cota 123.

Trials bike model numbers bare no resemblance to what the cc is it does get a bit complicated, I don’t ride anymore but I’m still involved with our club, we were pre65 only but had to admit twinshocks a few years ago to help keep entries up, although I weren’t keen on the idea it’s helped keep the club going, now some members want to include air cooled monos the suggestion was voted out at our last AGM but no doubt it will come in a year or two. I’ve been going to Scotland for the last 28yrs in May for the pre65 trial in Kinlochleven I used to ride the 300mls up but haven’t done recently due to COVID obviously hotel is booked for this year let’s hope it happens but I doubt I’ll ride up again.

A Montesa is a good stablemate for a TTR mine get on very well

Hey, thanks for the Trials info.

Neil - did you ride your Trials bike up to Scotland ? Roadworthy huh ? Long Ride as the gearing wouldn’t be all that conducive for the open road, would it ?

Pug - is your Montesa Roadworthy ? It looks like it. Did you do that or did it “come like that.”

I see that Lighting, Speedo and Horn Kits are available for my 1981 Cota 200 and I was toying with the idea of trying to make it Roadworthy here in NZ. Our Laws for this sort of thing, will be very similar to the UK.

It’s either that or buy a Trailer, or a Carrier that fits onto my Jeep’s Towbar.

Pug - good to know your TTR and Montesa “get on well.” TTR‘s must speak Spanish ! 🤔 

Since I got it at such a good price I don’t mind spending some coin on it.

Once again I apologise for asking these questions on a TTR Forum but hopefully others are finding this an interesting subject.

ADFE0E1C-778B-4A5A-BD68-C520EFB9B48D.jpegNo I only rode in local trials & it was quite a few years ago, I always had a road bike when I rode to Scotland, I was never at the standard to ride the 2 day pre65 trial, it’s quite a gruelling event, as well as the TTR I have a Fantic 500 Rally but I think the 300 miles to Scotland on that would be a struggle as I’m at the wrong side of 65yrs!!

Hi again,

Am writing this out in the sun, under a big beach umbrella (sorry you guys in the Northern Hemisphere but it’s mid Summer down here) drinking a cold Home Brew 🍺 in 28c (Don’t know what that is in “f” as no Country still uses that - surely) That was abit cheeky as I know the USA still uses Fahrenheit, must be the last place that does.

I had no idea Fantic made such a BIG ‘bike. I thought they were little whispy things that darted around like Tinkerbell !

What is the “Wrong side of 65yrs” ? I’m 69 and cracking 70 in March. This is the best time of your life !

Could be why I had no hesitation flicking out some coin for a 40 year old Spanish Lady (Montesa) 🥴

Yes, can only agree, a 2 day Trial in Scotland would be too much for we Elderly Gentlemen.

Brian - you’d be up for abit of that wouldn’t you ? Pasties and Tribute might be hard to find north of the Border though.

Dam, I must have a leaky beer glass, better get to the fridge for another brew 🍻

The Montesa is the 4ride model they come as a road ready bike but all the Montesa bikes can come ready for the road 4ride its a nice bike well up for even the hardest of rock or mud climb's

Hi Again,
Things are progressing well on this Project.
Not much to photograph at the moment because the Montesa is stripped down to the bare frame, which is going to be painted the right colour (red) instead of orange, early in February.
My first bunch of Parts arrived today and only took 6 days from West London to Auckland, which is amazing when you hear of the long freight delays that are around these days.
I can recommend the guys at Inmotion, for Montesa Parts, if you ever find someone who is wondering.

Hi guys,

Taking a break from the Montesa “Clean Up” and went for a ride out to my favourite Fish & Chip Shop at Kaiaua.

Thought you folks, who are locked into the middle of Winter, might get some warmth out a photo of sunshine, beer and “proper“ food !

The road from Auckland to Kaiaua is a wonderful ride as it hugs the coast and then goes inland through untouched native bush before hitting the coast again.

In a couple of places, if you get it wrong, you are in the sea, which is only a few metres away. 

Cheers and happy days, under beautiful blue skies and +25c temps.

We’re not jealous at all, honestly.
Gale warnings in the north of England today so it’s an opportunity to spray the shortened sidestand I’ve done for the TTR.

Hi Again,
Just getting back onto this subject after a Winter of Restoration, although not meaning to restore this to perfection so more of a “Serious Tidy Up.”
I got it all back together but it would not “Fire up.”
Fuel, Spark, Compression but no Bang !
Found that the Flywheel was loose (Broken Crankshaft Key) got a couple out from the UK (Inmotions) as Homemade ones didn’t last.
Now had Spark in the right place and she ran !
Time to Tune it, following Internet Instructions on how to do it.
She fired up and ran at maximum Revs and the Kill Switch did nothing to stop it so pulled off the Spark Plug Lead - still nothing !
She stopped by herself after about half a minute.
The Base Gasket had blown to pieces so she was sucking in air from there and the Spark Plug must have been running red hot.
She was “Dieseling” so I’m told.
Pulled the Head and Barrel off and one of the Rings had turned and climbed up over the locating pin and scored the Bore.
Oversized Pistons and Rings are like Rockinghorse Poo.
The Piston has survived ok and have found a new Cylinder Sleeve in Oregon, USA. It’s on its way to NZ now.
Rings are being searched for at the moment - best prospect so far are from Germany.
I’ve had to call in some Expert help.

My TTR is about to come out from Winter Hibernation so it will be great to get out and about on that again.
Have been out on some “Sneaky Rides” but only around a 5k block because it’s is not Registered or has a current Roadworthy
Certificate.
