Suspension damper valve adjustment


i have just rebuilt my front and rear suspension with the help of Brian's excellent guides, refilling with Motul 5W oil on the fronts and TQF transmission for the rear shock.

When checking the damping adjustment on the fronts, the valves at the bottom of the leg seem to have no effect on what is supposed to be the rebound damping regardless if the adjustment screw is on min or max adjustment. This is just by manually pushing the shock down [off the bike as its under renovation!) both legs behaving the same.

On the rear shock, checking as per Brian's video, the clicker adjustment seems to work fine but adjusts both the bump and the rebound. What then does the adjustment on the remote reservoir do as again turning from Min to max seems to have no effect.

There seems to be no mention of the effect these damper screws anywhere (or in Brian's overhaul procedures). Are these adjusters a high speed adjuster so that manually the effect is not really detectable or what? Anyone tried adjusting these after a rebuild, if so did your shocks behave like mine, or are my damper valves shot?

There does not seem to be a way to dismantle the rear adjuster valve once the adjuster wheel and detent springs/ball bearing are removed. The boss that you can see may well unscrew, but i did not try that as i did not want to risk damaging it. Anyone (Brian ) managed to dismantle it? 

Also the rear adjuster wheel was bottoming out on the casing, so preventing the full number of max clicks in. I had to machine off the inner lip of the wheel to give clearance to the casing and get max adjustment, but it still didnt seem to make any difference.

Hi Dave

I don't understand what is going on with your forks but the adjustment should be affecting their damping force. That said, quite a few owners find that using different weight fork oil, introducing air pressure or spacing the springs to give more resistance is possibly a more effective way of tuning the front suspension.

I am not going to be able to help much on the rear shock either but, for what it's worth, this is what the user manual says about the rear shock absorber for the blue TTRs.

The clicker adjustment at the bottom of the rear shock adjusts the "rebound damping force". See towards the end of this thread.

The adjuster on the shock reservoir adjusts the "compression damping force".
