Hi all, discovered motorbikes in my 50s and looking at a dual sport. A 2005 TTR250 with about 3000 miles on it is up for sale in my area, road registered. I can find lots of off road info online but not much re on road. I'm about 5'9, 88kg, just wondering how they go at 55-60 mph for 30 or 40 minutes at a time (like lots of rest stops)

Hi there,

You are looking at a great bike for weight and requirements. Plenty of people on here and elsewhere have used the ttr for extended trips on and offroad.

Unlike alot of other dirtbikes the ttr is pretty smooth, comfortable enough seat and has a 6th gear to drop the revs at a cruising speed.

Thanks for the quick reply, really appreciate it. A couple of other questions, I'm having trouble finding out how much weight the wee beast can handle eg myself and pillion or camp gear? And is there anything specific to look out for on older 2nd hand models? And service intervals?

A few threads on here talk about subframe cracking under heavy load and i guess off road riding.

I made sure i had a bit extra triangulation welded into where the subframe meeting the main part, not too hard a thing to sort or expensive.

I have never had a pillion on the back offroad but on the road it was fine, i have and others have done extensive trips loaded up and been fine.

Thanks again for the replies. I started hesitating on the bike as I read it's only rated to 90kg but then read that it's 180kg in Australia. So only a regulatory number and not a metallurgical one? At this stage, I'm only envisioning myself and a small bag, daytrips or light overnighters

Hi again, due to me vacillating, I missed out on that ttr250, but recently another low km model has popped up as well as a 2019 xt250. Has anyone had experience on both bikes? Pros and cons? I realize its apples and oranges comparing a 2006 ttr with a fi xt250, in my head ttr is more powerful, xt250 newer bike but worried the power maybe lacking. The xt 250 is about 25% dearer. Just want a bike to explore backroads trails etc but capable of tarmac duty to get me there. Thoughts anyone?

If you google 2019 yamaha xt250 there are a few reviews.

The TTR is taller, has much better suspension and brakes and is more powerful. It's a full-size dual sport capable of enduro use if you so wish. The XT is a small bike, a great trail bike for less demanding riding but will get out of shape if you push too hard. Lighter and nimble, and the fi engine is suprisingly torquey but it's no match for a ttr.

I would go for the ttr 'cause it is capable of everything the xt can do, plus so much more, better in all areas. I have ridden both, and done a lot of work for a customer with one which she bought to replace a Serow 225. It's a better bike than the 225 (despite losing 1 ratio from the gearbox!) and if you were really short legged it might be a more difficult decision. I got on it and was immediately thinking of YZ fork swaps and how to improve the rear shock...

Would be good if you could test ride both before you buy, but I know that's often difficult.
