First post on the forum. I ve been reading your posts for some time now and they ve really helped me out with some issues and questions I ´ve had. I m the owner of a 97 OE for the past few months and it really does put a smile on my face everytime I ride it. Ok, I will present myself and the bike in the appropriate thread.
Cutting to the chase, the previous owner had installed a kickstarter along the electric one which I really like to use. Its the first bike I have with a kickstart so I m trying to get the hang of it but some times, the compression is too high. When I first bought it, meaning the very same day I bought it from the previous owner I had a nasty fall which broke the right rear indicator, bent the steering wheel and broke the head of my right fibula. This meant that for months it would sting like a **** everytime I tried kicking it.
For the past months I ve been kickstarting with a lot of success but lately, sometimes, right after finding TDC and then fully commiting to the kick, the compression wont let me follow through which leaves my leg and my self in shock and the kickstart midway. Valves have been adjusted and the e start works fine. My mechanic has advised me to use 98octane gasoline, smh. :/ I ve tried it, doesnt change anything.
All this is making me think that a decompression lever would be REALLY useful but reading various forum posts hasnt made clear if there is anyway to install a decomp lever to a TTR250 OE. What do you guys say?
Thnx in advance,
Tasos

I'm pretty sure the decomperessor from a road bike with the same head fits but the kick-start in the ttr doesn't have the auto decompress cam in it .so doubt if anything would work.
Best put your time and cash into keeping the electric start going
I have both electric and kick the kick start is nice to have but pretty useless
I am surprised on two counts. Firstly that you like using the kickstart and, secondly, that your TTR has such high compression as to make it difficult to kick over
The decompressor on the TTR250 is a simple affair as shown in the photo. Pull the lever and it opens an exhaust valve.
I have found on nearly all the TTRS that I have tried with a kickstart is that the kickstart is geared in such a way that doesn't really turn the engine over as I would expect and I find it difficult to use to start the bike.
I am sure there are still quite a few TTRs out there with the decompressor mechanism still in the head, unused, but with the cable removed.
If you are serious about fitting one then maybe put an advert in the "Wanted" sub forum.
A very interesting first post - thank you very much for enlivening my morning here in a sunny SW UK
Its good to see an active forum board with people helping out others. :)
I will be trying to maintain everything on this bike, including the estart, because the last owner had done the exact same thing and the bike is in great condition.
My last bike was an XT600 sm conversion that was in bad condition when bought and the estart had failed me more than once. Everything that could go wrong did. Batteries, relays, cables, buttons, rectifiers... So I like the security of being able to kickstart the bike if needed. Plus, it feels really cool doing it 8)
About the high compression I mentioned, I wanna clarify that I m not experienced with motorbikes so that high compression could be another thing that I cant figure out. In any case, I will be putting an ad on the forum in the near future for the decomp lever but since I m located in Greece, I will wait to see if I should order in bulk some goodies from the eshop as well. The bashplate, for example seems really useful and its quite tempting.
Thanx for the help!
Regards from a rainy Athens, Greece,
Tasos
