So, small problem, I was about to remove my oil drain bolt, I felt very confident in how my socket was placed on the bolt, long story short the bolt did not turn but just rounded out. What am I supposed to do now? (P.s the socket was firmly seated on the bolt)

A good quality  single hex socket is the go and a little tap on

Multi hex sockets are likely to round a nut off

The hex is not too bad, single hex socket for sure give the drain plug a tap first, then get the single hex socket & tap it onto the plug, use a strongarm & give it a sharp yank, if its trying to push off the plug keep tapping the socket or put a jack under it but only tight enough to prevent the socket driving off.

The head is rounded off, if all else fails use a center punch, tap into the flange of the bolt area and create a center punch mark then slow angle the punch to be able to tap the punch to the left to undo the bolt. Then order a bolt and copper washer Good luck

Bad luck Samuel cry

My solution is the same as Rossboys. The only way I know to get one out where Molegrips etc can't be used is to lay the bike on its side and notching the collar and undoing it using a hammer and cold chisel on the outer edge of the plug.

The only alternative is to drill it out I guess but that has got to be the last resort.

Good luck.

Brian

Hi, i had exactly the same problem a while back. I ended up VERY CAREFULLY cutting the flange off the plug with a dremel. Cut almost all the way through the flange, then use a small chisel/ punch/ old screwdriver to lift off the cut piece. This reduced the friction enough to enable me to use mole grips to undo the rounded off head of plug. i also used the dremel to make a couple of new flats on the plug head for the mole grips to hold. For Christ's sake don't cut too deep and damage the sump or it may not seal again. Obviously a new sump plug and washer required afterwards!! Good luck and be careful, especially with cutting and hammering against aluminium engine cases.
