After a delay of some 5 years or so i have started to complete the rebuild of my blue TTR. Rolling chassis with new powder coating is all complete. I was in the process of replacing the cylinder head when I realised I'd put the cam chain blade in upside down. Off came the head but it took the barrel with it and I watched in horror as a locating dowel from the barrel fell inside the motor.
I can't even see it at the moment let alone get a magnet on it. I'm thinking of taking the motor out and trying to shake it loose, but clearly am open to any suggestions at this moment in time.
I hope there is an idea that can help. I have never split a motor and don't really want to start down that path now.
I did the same a long while back and was about to take the engine out when my missus came to my rescue. She has a lot more patience than me and fished it out on the end of a telescopic magnet - the small variety that you get in the Lidl or Aldi multi-headed screwdrivers.
She can't recall if she could actually see it but she got it out nevertheless. It is unlikely to have gone far from the crank bottom.
Just had another thought maybe a vacuum cleaner and attach a small plastic tube and try the same as Brian suggested with the magnet a long shot I've never tried it just an idea
With the clutch side cover off you might see it through one of the oil passageways. It probably won't have dropped onto the gears - direct drop from the barrel opening would be straight to the bottom I think.
Good luck!
Motorcycling Gods are smiling on me today. The dowel was actually in the cam chain tunnel and the chain had stopped it from dropping too far down inside the motor. A piece of wire coat hanger and some magnets with a hole in the middle enabled the swift retrieval. All good time to refit everything and get back to where I was yesterday.
