3 Batteries Dead by morning the next day
Permalink

Hi, not sure if I gave the right subject title. (bare with me)

Hi all, Francis here from Kampala Uganda. A few days back bought another TTR250 Raid and even though the dealer suggested that its a 2000 model, I know its a 1994(will share pictures)

I got the bike a few days back and my local mechanic suggested we change the battery cause the one on the bike was "dead". Failed to find an actual replacement so went with an alternative. I have so far run though 3 of them, they work when we first install them but by morning, they have no charge at all. Yesterday I had him check for any problems and he replaced a few parts 2 to be precise. I have attached the images of what was replaced.

I am a sound engineer, so not very strong on fixing the bike myself. havent had this problem before so I thought I should inquire of yo'alls insite. I'd appreciate any help or advice on what to do or what to check for. I will be trying to acquire the battery that came with the motorcycle today and try to revive it.20191105_082235.jpg20191105_082245.jpg20191105_082252.jpg

If it's charging OK with the new stator and regulator if you have a voltmeter you'd be looking for around 13.5. To 14 volts with engine running and a few revs.

To check for drain the easiest way is to disconnect the battery when it's parked if it starts when reconnected . Next step would to be to chase down the drain while parked.

Hi Frances!

If you disconnect the battery overnight, is it still charged in the morning? If so, something on your TTR is draining the battery.

Once the ignition is switched off there is very little left that could do this other than the digital speedo. I had a bike that this happened on but the drain was quite small and it would only flatten the battery after a week or so. I just put in an easily accessible connector which I disconnected if I knew I wasn't going to use the bike for a few days.

Your regulator rectifier isn't the original TTR one which looks like this:

Do you have a manual? If so, all the tests voltages and checks are listed in there. It really is a good manual wink

Steve sells digital copies in Totally TTRs - see here

Thanks for the response.
Thankfully the battery charged so the new starter and regulator must have been the main problem. (and yes i got the original regulator to replace what was there.)
I also put a on/off switch for the headlight from the battery so hopefully that does the trick.
Will update you in the morning
