Ticking noise
Permalink

Hi all

I'm hoping to get some insight from this group. My TTR started ticking right after an oil change. Idk if the oil is maybe too thin or maybe it's just a coincidence.

Some notes: climate here is temperate (8-30C). Current oil is Liqui Moly 4T Synth 10W60 off-road racing. Overkill, I know.

Sounds like it may be valve or timing chain related. Note that the noise is loudest at low temp. I've recorder it using my phone and placed a google drive sharing link here: FILE

I would greatly appreciate any insight.

Thanks!

That is a very odd noise! First off I thought it sounded like an exhaust leak but then it became clearer and sounded like a mechanical rattle. Almost as if something was loose and vibrating against a casing.

Others might disagree but it didn't sound like the usual tick of a too-large valve clearance.

Where is the ticking actually coming from. Perhaps hold a screwdriver with the soft end to your ear and the sharp end to various parts of the engine to see where the noise is loudest.

a) Is the oil definitely circulating around the engine?

b) Did you move, adjust, or otherwise fettle anything other than the filter cover and sump plug?

Well this started after I had to remove the starter motor a few weeks ago. I had to remove the oil pipes to access the starter. That's when i decided i might as well do an oil change.

The sound only occurs at 2000+rpm. On idle it's quiet. I'm also pretty sure the oil is circulating since I've been on a 4 hour off road ride and daily commute for weeks with no issue.

There seems to be no apparent change in performance. It sounds like it's from the top end of the motor.

Is the cam chain tensioner ok? Sounds a bit like a chain flapping/chain slider flapping to me. Presume you had the tensioner off to get the starter motor off?

60w oil is pretty thick, I think 40 is recommended.

Is it not the header pipe guard? they can rattle a bit.

I've never even touched the tensioner. Suppose it's worth a look.

 The sound is definitely internal.
