Rear shock - oil change
Permalink

Hello All ... hope you're all making the best of the long days out on the trails :)

In the build uo to a long adventure, I've decided to do a general maintenance on my TTR and on my VERY long list is oil change to the rear shock.

I purchased a 'Nitrogen needle with Schrader valve kit' from Totally TTRs and after reading though the instructions, released the air/nitro in the bladder. However, I just can't seem to push back the bottom section of the reservoir to expose the retaining ring! I've even tried pushing it back with a g-clamp!

The (now famous) Russian thread, seems to suggest that once the air/nitro is released from the bladder, its a matter of pushing the bottom in with your thumb!

Any suggestions on this?

Hi there

I am guessing you are following the instructions here?

In which case we had to put the reservoir in the vice to move the cap - see the photo in the guide. I put a comment in "Push the reservoir cap down just far enough to allow you to use a small screwdriver to remove its wire circlip. It is easier to do this in the vice using a socket pushing down against the cap."

Over the years fine dust/dirt along with possible corrosion conspire to make the cap a sticky fit!

Brian

PS If you are following "our" instructions, any feedback for changes or corrections would be much appreciated!

Brian! My savior and my 'new' hero :)

The answer is NO I wasn't aware of these instruction and was following the blog on the TTR forum that takes you to a Russian dude's page. He seems to imply that he simply pushed the base cap with his thumb so when I was REALLY struggling initially though ... right there must be something wrong here. At first i though need a longer needle as suspected that I haven't quite reached the bladder area to allow total deflation.

Now I know better as I need some serious power to push the cap in. So many thanks for that.

After have had a good look at the instructions you sent me I doubt I'll be in a position to add anything positive to them as I'm simply wanting to replace the oil and not preforming a total refurb.

I be having a shot at it tonight and will keep you posted.

MANY THANKS
George

OK! So as it is with most thinks I put myself to, Murphy's Law always seems to apply!

Following your instructions on disassembly. I came to the bit of were you suggest to place the reservoir in a vice... Naturally Murphy's Law states that the top cap will push in and not the bottom cap!!!! Anyway, long story short, I got there in the end.

There is one thing I did different to your instruction and I think its relevant and important, so here goes ... As my top cap was rather tight, I quickly decided that using the original 4mm cap screw as a point of leverage to remove it (once the 'C' clip was removed), was not ideal as it was likely that I was going to damage it. What I did instead, was to use a an M4x30mm screw with a nut and washer at the base to steady it. This provided a better point of leverage and as it was sacrificial, I was able to attach a vice grip to the screw body for brute force.
