Bike dies on idle with choke in.

Hi Guys,

I have just recently gotten my carb back together and on the bike - Reason for taking it apart was that it would bog down and die when applying throttle. I've cleaned the jets and put in a new float bowl seal and diaphram o ring seals (Old ones were flattened, diaphram is in good condition). I followed the stickied guide on the forums for the carb and the pilot screw is two turns out.

After putting it back together it ran great for about 10 minutes, was idling with the choke all the way in and revving no problems.

But it started sputtering and struggling after that and eventually cut out. It starts up great with the choke out still, but if I put the choke in it will die. And with the choke out revving the bike also causes it to bog and sometimes cut out.

The previous owner ran the bike with an fmf pipe, if he had put in larger jets would that cause a problem? (I have a stock pipe back on it).

Is it worth cleaning the tank as I may have just pulled through more dirty fuel?

Cheers guys.

The fact that it ran properly, even if  only for 10 minutes, shows that you had cleaned the carb properly and that the jetting was OK.

I think you have already guessed what has likely happened in that a bit of dirt has got in with the fuel and clogged the pilot jet.

Maybe consider adding a filter to the petrol line once you have cleaned the carb again.

I'll give the fuel tank a good rinse and drain the carb, hopefully clean fuel will flush out the carb well enough as I'd rather not take it back off. Appreciate the help guys smile.

I like your optimism and hope you get a result but I have a suspicion that clean fuel won't dislodge whatever is jamming up the pilot jet cry

Fingers crossed your idea works though wink

Did you get this problem resolved? Also, was your header pipe glowing red at any point? I'm curious to see how this turns out.

I had carb issues with my bike. it started when I found 2/3rds of an air filter in the airbox. I never knew that so much crumbled foam could get inside the carb. It was in the float bowl and above the throttle slide. Cleaned and refitted it ran fine until one evening it popped and everytime I stopped it died. Choke out fired up and ran, knock off the choke and ride at any speed no problem as soon as I stopped it stopped. choke out off we go. Took the carb off again and found the tiniest piece of filter foam ( I think ) in the air flow chamber. All back together and it ran fine until I got home and just before I turned of the engine pop and it cut out. only way to start was choke out. So to save taking everything off again I took the cover plate off the air flow chamber, sprayed some carb cleaner in let it evaporate put the plate back on and fired bike up . Ticked over and has done so with no problems ever since
