Trying out a new back tyre for a run to Spain plus 5 days of rocky trails. My normal tyre for this has been a Heidenau K60, 130/80 x 18 but it's getting a bit worn out. My lovely knobbly Maxxis IT would be toast after the 1000 miles of 65mph tar plus maybe 400 of track so I'm experimenting with a Michelin Anakee Wild 130/80 x 18. Looks plenty knobbly enough, more than the Heidi. We'll see how it wears and I'll report back...
The wheel weights are to counteract the Tubliss beadlock. The tyres themselves wouldn't need such huge lumps of brass!
Front tyre will stay Mitas 644 Army Special. The front Mich doesn't have enough side lug for my preference, but this will probably limit my cornering lean so those chicken strips will probably have to be shaved off with a knife
Back from my run to Spain (setting up new map area for 2021 VINCE laying out checkpoints and verifying routes).
1727 miles over 9 days, of which approx 600 were off tarmac. Mostly rocky or gravelly tracks, no mud or sand. The Mich rear was fine. I ran at 28psi on the road there/back, 22 during the week of trails. Gripped well on the loose surfaces and was great on the dry tar - managed to get a boot down whilst on the footpeg on some of the hairpin bends and wore those chicken strips off!
Wear-wise, tread depth when new was 11mm. By the time I got back, it was down to 7mm in the centre and 9mm at the 1/3 and 2/3 treadwidth. May be a bit disappointed with that, even allowing for the fact I was carrying a lot of stuff on the hot, grippy tarmac, but I still think something knobblier would have been worse, and with poorer road manners and more vibration at 65mph.
Would I use them again over the Heidenaus? Probably, even with higher rates of wear I think they were grippier off-tar, which is where you need it!
The front Mitas 644 was suprisingly not as worn out as I was expecting, but I was consciously mixing front and rear brakes whenever sensible to share the load.
Cubber feel free to rotate that if you wish! Your wish is my command, Sir
Thanks
Hmmm, rubber - it's a fetish you know!
