I have been having an intermediate issue with my speedo, my cable snapped and I brought an aftermarket cable and fitted it and it worked for an hour and stopped working. then I assumed that will be the problem so I bought a new Yamaha speedo cable fitted this and the same happened again it works for an hour then stopped. I have removed the speedo drive and cleaned it out and re-greased it, fitted it and it worked again for 15 minutes. I have run the speedo up to 60mph with a drill and that seems to work fine. any advice as I don't want to purchase a drive for 53quid unless I have too.

When I had the drive apart I didn't see anything out of the ordinary that indicted allot of wear (its done 25k) and it meshes with the wheel to my knowledge and it baffles me.

 

Does anyone have a cheap drive for sale?

Any help would be good thanks, Chris

Are you sure the tab washer wasn't slipping Chris?

That's usually the cause of the analogue speedos failing.

If the tabs in the speedo drive are worn or bent they might only be engaging intermittently. That's normally the issue. See Brian's thread here:

il try the replacing the plain washers and tab washer and see how I go maybe they are worn, knowing my luck it won't work and il have to buy a speedo drive. Il keep you posted

I carefully peened the drive washer so it fitted the drive a bit tighter worked A couple of years but need one of Steve's flash replacements now

just buy a trailtec like i did £79 good value for money & no more problems

I fitted two new washers and a new tab washer and this has cured it. I got the vernier out and the first washer has worn by 0.3mm and this must of been the problem. been out and tested her today and all is good!

no, we caught a little obstacle while out, and it was easier to lift the bikes over than do back.
