HI Considering TTR some helpful info please!!

Hi im Nick

I have been riding bikes for many years now and my favourite style of riding is Trail/Enduro

I live on the Greek island of Crete six months a year which has absolutely fantastic mountainous trail riding routes ,spectacular scenery and excellent Food& Drink in  villages generally not too far away! I am fully  conversant with motorcycle mechanics (Well most of the time anyway!)

I am considering purchasing A TTR 250.

I'm retiring my xlr250r (Basically an older style XR250 with lights / indicators/ no battery) and looking for replacement.

I also have a restored 30-year-old Suzuki DR 600 ( I'm in the vintage motorcycle club of my city in Greece.) I tried out the 600 on a few trails and whilst I did it and was a magic ride to be honest i it's at bit of a pig off road. I'm happy to keep that for the ride outs with the motorcycle club.

So to the TTR250-

Please tell me what is the measurement is from the upper edge of foot rest to the sitting edge of the seat. I am 6 ,3 I'm definitely not fat but a reasonable size bloke. iWould the ttr be too small for me? My xlr was ok with the overstuffed seat.

I plan to buy taller handlebars and I can always have the seat restuffed to give me a couple of extra centimetres which takes some of the pressure off the joints at the back of my knee I t seems to stop that "tight feeling”

Does the"Open Euro model" TTR 250 differ substantially than the blue model? Are the forks the same diameter. I have read the FAQ and leaving aside cosmetic differences there doesn't appear to be so.

Is the power approximately the same

Is the suspension(Rear) as competent as the newer "blue" model.

I'm aware I could possibly a Honda XR 400 but the extra height/weight and lack of electric start means in baking hot weather it would always be a challenge in remote areas.

I am also currently investigating with the Greek licensing authorities if the bike can be increased in cubic capacity (Greek laws different than UK) what would be the approximate cost of the 325 modification-parts only

Kind regards in advance to all

Nick Gilbert

Nick you will love a TTR .
Way better than any XR .
Im 6 2 and high bars renthal dakar high bend and about 2 inch added to the seat and its perfect for everything .
If your old bike was xl and dr600 the ttr is a huge improvement in every area ,other than the 600 for long road use .
Its the best bike for allround use .
Get one you wont regret it and all parts are available from Totally TTRs for anything special or most standard parts locally .
With luck you wont need anything but consumables they are so well built and reliable .

Welcome to the forum Nick.

Do you know an old bloke called Zorba? confuse   biggrinbiggrin

Don't take no for an answer - get a TTR and enjoy yourself. I managed with one easily - I'm just a bit over 6' - no bother until I got too ancient to ride.  hmm

Hi Nick,

I've had all of those bikes, my favourite was the xr400 for off road and found kick starting it to be easy however I never took mine to any real hills where kick starting could be awkward.

If I was you though I'd go for a ttr250, they are great off road and still fun on road. I rode mine on a 4 month trip last summer over every terrain no problems. All the prep before hand was easy and well supported by this forum.

Good luck

Dan

Hi Dan,

thanks for the info

Yes I’m seriously considering the TTR because at points in all my future travels I will do some considerable miles on road As well As off. Crete is 220 miles long ( through mountains)  One of the main issues is that some of the tracks and trails are use are extremely narrow steep and rocky big bikes can be a real struggle at 30 degrees 😎

Hi, I had a XR400RC before I bought the TT250R new in 2013, the XR had a great engine but to be honest the TTR handles better & is kinder on your body. You won't regret getting a TTR as they are very easy to live with.

Cheers Terry

Had an xr - the 250 ttr was more powerful .
Had an xr 400 to replace ttr and it had a fine engine loads of torque offroad but ttr outran it on the road with its 6th gear .Also couldnt drive the xr at night as light and stator output were terrible . Lovely engine in xr400 but no 6th gear no electric start or battery made it impractical as an allrounder .
650 xr has same problems if honda had updated the xr with modern electrics battery starter and 6th gear it would be aa great allround bike .

If you liked your 94 XR you will love a TTR250. Great motor, better suspension and E start.
