Welcome to the forum Jim!

If the clutch switch (see here) isn't working properly the CDi will cut out the ignition when you engage gear and won't let you start the TTR in gear even if the clutch lever is pulled in.

Could that be it?

Brian

I guess so - it's just a simple make & break circuit - but it's there for a reason.

have tried bridgeing the clutch switch to no effect, if I have the engine running and disconnect the blue wire from the neutral switch on the gearbox the engine will stop reconnect and the engine will start. any ideas what the problem can be ?.

Presuming that the engine is running whilst in neutral, the neutral switch will be grounded and the CDi will consider it safe. Disconnect its wire and the CDi will think you have selected a gear and will cut the ignition UNLESS you have de-clutched. So, your neutral switch is working as it should.

Thinking about the clutch switch, I think pulling in the lever breaks the circuit by pushing in a plastic pin. In which case you need an open circuit to bypass it rather than bridge it. I think - anyone else know?

Yes I agree with you that the neutral switch appears to be working ok

I have the bike with the rear wheel of the ground and with the engine running and the clutch pulled in and as soon as I engage gear the engine stops and that is without releasing the clutch lever.

I have ordered a new clutch switch which I should receive tomorrow but do you think that will resolve the problem or have any more sugestions of what I can try

Disconnect your existing clutch switch and see if that solves the problem?

Clutch and sidestand switch are the two obvious ones. If you're happy they are both functioning correctly, try tracing the cable back from each chscking for breaks or loose connections.Do you have another CDI you can change out?

Thanks all for your help and advise regarding my electrical problems.

The fault was a badly connected bridge on the side stand switch so I am now up and running again.

Many Thanks for your input

Jim Clark
