Headlight goes out under revs but not at idle!

hi guys,

Just getting my 93 OE ready for MOT and my polisport headlight flickers and goes out under revs but is fine at idle, can't find any dubious wires so just thought I'd ask just in case someone had encountered this problem??

Cheers in advance

Shane

Seems like noone's come across this one before! Can you check the voltage at the bulb with a multimeter. Also check the voltage across the battery, first with the engine off -which will give the battery condition, then start the engine. The voltage should go up, sometimes to 13-14v which would indicate the charging system is healthy. If the voltage drops a lot as you rev up, my gut feeling is there's a problem with the stator, or possibly the regulator/rectifier, but electrics aren't really my thing and hopefully someone who knows what he's talking about will be along soon!
Good luck,
Simon.

Of course check battery leads and earth connections, and the connections to the stator (plug on left side of bike above the carb) before digging deeper!

I'm not sure how the stator is wound on the TTR, but, my RD350 has low speed and high speed windings. If the TTR is the same maybe the high speed windings are failing to put out enough charge?

HI

could be an issue with the regulator/rectifier , if a diode is out you get partial rectification at low speed but once the speed (frequency) increases it can create a Back induced voltage in the stator cancelling out the output .

if it wasn't in a bike it  would make a discernible Hum

any chance the battery or power source has been reversed lately even for a split second , this can destroy a diode .

if you have ruled out loose wiring ,broken filament in the light .

one question do the other lights drop off as well with revs if so kind of rules out wiring
