Tony, according to the link you supplied, you should be looking for BOATS (Byway Open To All Traffic) of which you seem to have a scarcity.

Join your local TRF and they will help you with the routes they ride.

Once joined a local group then you'll have access to other groups for knowledge.

It's a long way north from Devon so take plenty of petrol tokens. smile

Also look for ORPAs on the OS map - lines of equally spaced red dots. Usually have vehicular access, unless marked otherwise at the entry/exits. I did have some maps marked up but I think I've loaned them out.
If you join GLASS, they have the Trailwise 2 website up and running which gives a comprehensive list of routes with motorised access. You won't have to speak to anyone, or turn down offers to lead you if you'd rather go it alone... The TRF are dragging their heels with their version of TW2 for some reason, probably because they'd rather you joined one of their ride outs, and can't ideologically get past this mindset. The local council websites are also improving, they just take some getting used to, but it's so different to the time you had to visit the local council offices and plead to see the closely guarded definitive maps!

Thanks for all the quick and helpful responses so far. Whilst I understand the TRF work and fully appreciate it I'm just not drawn to it myself and not because I'm tight!

Cubber- I had picked up on the BOATS and even rode out to find a few around Thirsk but they are now restricted. The memory map link is very helpful though. I wasn't aware of www.memory-map.co.uk/ so will have a good read here too.

Hoping to get out this Sunday with a couple of mates for a scout around. Guess i need to buy / hire a van for those trails further afield.

I will also look up the West Yorkshire Lane Riders too

Managed a trip up to Bilsdale Transmission tower and had a play on some unclassified roads. Also managed to get both wheels off the ground a few times... still learning biggrin

Hi,

Though you are looking for destinations near Yorkshire, for future plans may I suggest Himalayas for off road riding? There are some classic motorbike off road tours that is every rider's dream. The snow capped mountains, panoramic landscapes and some wonderful monasteries depicting ancient Tibetan culture.

You can takeoff from Manali and head towards Leh Ladakh on a Royal Enfield Classic or Himalayan! There are many guides that can help customize tour.

Download an app called Viewranger it does cost to fully subscribe but at £24.99 for full OS Maps it's good value. You can use limited features for free. On there there are a number of TRF beginner routes. The nearest one to you starts in Wetwang which is only 20 miles east of York so easy to reach. I've done that route loads and although easy because it's 100% flat although there are some seriously muddy bits after log wet spells. I do this route on my own regularly it's a 50 mile route with plenty of it off road. Plus it's 100% legal
