I'm am trying to do all my own maintenance but am learning slowly i have looked at the links on suspension but not sure where to start!?

Any help would be gratefully received

I am also going on a 3 day ride in the lake district in ten days and don't want to break down or start something i cant finish by then!

Most common cause is the top shock bearing right up under the seat/tank a quick fix is take the seat off and spray it with some kind of lube

If there is any visible wear or moment there is as good replacement that comes with clear instructions  on the ttr info list

I fitted one on my bike and it's been a permanent  fix

Not something that would stop you on a ride just really annoying

Hi Ross and good to hear you are having a go at doing your own repairs and maintenance! The big plus with the TTR is how simple and easy it is to work on compared to many other trail bikes.

As the guys suggest, it is 99% likely to be your top shock bearing has gone dry.

The quick fix is to drown it in WD40 or similar lubricant. The seals on the original bush are made of a strange dense foam so it might take a couple of goes to get some lubricant into the wearing surfaces of the bearing and stop the dreaded squeak.

However, if the bearing has been squeaking for a while it could well have worn through lack of lube. Put the TTR on a bike stand with the back wheel off the ground and seat off. Grab the back wheel and try and move it up and down to check for play in the bearing.

If there is play then although it is probably still OK to carry on riding it's best you plan to replace the bearing. Genuine new Yam bearings are expensive (about £40 GBP plus more if you need new collars and seals) but a good alternative is available from Steve's shop here wink

Good luck

Brian

Hi

I checked the back wheel and you could move it up and down and you could see the top of the shock move slightly too. i have drowned it in oil as suggested and the squeak has gone but i guess it will need replacing
It appears the bearing kit is ex stock at the moment so it may have to wait. The process for replacement looks mildly terrifying too especially the drilling bit! Im wondering when i do this whether it worth doing the linkage and swing arm as well. I was also wondering if there are any good replacement shocks available as the shock must be tired its a 54 plate bike.

I'd rate the job as pretty easy and have a go  but everones different

I had my shock rebuilt which is usually cost effective if the shaft and chrome are OK

The guy who did mine fitted a wrr piston/valve internals

 Hi Ross

I should have a complete shock back in soon, this comes complete with new top bearings.

I do have original top shock bearings in the shop and I am waiting for the aftermarket ones to come in, maybe about a week.

Hope that helps.

Steve
