Not one to ride with a bad back Steve! Some good testing trails there. Limekiln Lane also a good one - not as technical, but seems to climb and climb forever. Trials tyres and Tubliss at 5 psi recommended!
Up that way with the TRF next weekend and if no one will take us out that way on Sunday I will plan my own route, it is a lane I want to ride, bad back or not
Like the sound of the other lanes and always up is best! are they near by?
Actually not sure I've named Limekiln correctly in my memory. The one I mean heads SSW from Tintern Abbey. Lovely long climb of moderate rock steps. There's plenty in the area to go at. Also the only place I've seen cops patrolling on CRF250Ls. Lots of illegal riding done by kids on 'crossers in Forest of Dean. Make sure your bike's more or less legal, just in case, oh, and don't forget your glasses now the bast**ds are doing on the spot eye tests...
Where's Devil's staircase? I swear the TRF makes secret names up sometimes. Just like the masons

Limekiln is right Simon! I recollect it being the first lane after Tintern Abbey and had a small section of Roman cobbles in it plus a really nasty section of flat slate that was a disaster if you lost momentum - almost impossible to get moving again on knobblies
Both Limekiln and The Devil's Staircase used to be included in the Wyegate Trial although I think the Staircase was dropped in recent years as possibly a tad dangerous so maybe avoid it Steve!!!!
It was in the Trial in 2015 and both lanes are mentioned in the report here
"The Devil's Staircase downhill is a 'deep breath' challenge - perhaps we should come up next year! "
I have only ridden down The Staircase once many years ago and that's enough for me - I have ticked it off my "must do" Welsh lanes - only the Monk's Trod is left on that list. Brown Trousers, The Old Motel Road, Gap Road, etc all having been conquered
Sadly I have no tracklogs for back then as we didn't have the benefit of GPS.
Brian
PS Some random photos:
February 2003 - mayhem on Pant-Glas - two men down already!
Same trail ride - getting my TTR airborne somewhere in Wales!
Are brown trousers and devils stair case near Pant Glas.
Thanks for all the info so far Bri
I have sent you the GRs for Brown Trousers (or Grwyne Fawr) Steve but am not publishing it here as I honestly don't know if it's still a legal RoW following NERCA
The Devil's Staircase can't be too far from Pant-Glas as it used to be a section on the Wygate Trial but darned if I can find it on an OS map. Always a problem with the names trail riders give these famous lanes. Who said Boulder Alley??????
Here is a video of a couple of guys descending the Devil's Staircase video here - https://www.facebook.com/motoward/videos/732445333472258/
There is a rumour that one amongst us actually rode UP it last weekend - could that be true - will we believe it without photos or video evidence without which, as we all know, it didn't happen

Just watched the video, pretty steep & rocky, would rather come down than go up
