Front fork boots.

I am currently getting new knobbies put on my rims and when I was taking off the front rim I noticed A lot of oily goop at the bottom of the fork seal. I want to take off both boots to inspect the fork seals but can't seem to get them off. Any ideas?

Probably just gummed on. You could just gently run a blunt flat-head screwdriver under the edge all the way round - there's nothing vulnerable directly underneath. Warm it with hot water if it feels a bit brittle to soften it.

Ok, thanks. I'll let you know if something's wrong

That worked. Luckily there was nothing wrong. But there was some white plastic between the speedometer cable and a clip on the bottom of the fork. It fell apart. Is this piece important or just there to prevent wear.
