Road reg a 2005 TTR (Australia VIC) Tips needed.

Hi all.

Being a bit slack here, i did a search on registration Australia on this forum. But nothing came up.

I have a 2005 ttr, i have no doubts it will pass a vic road roadworthy. Mechanically i feel its A1. Visually looks clean.

I am not current with whats what. This bike came with knobbies on it. I am unclear if these are road legal.

I suspect these are not, where do you find this info before you goto a roadworthy place and drop $$$ to be told these aint legal.

Also, would really like to hear from anybody that has any tips on what i should be checking before taking it in for a RWC. (Road Worthy Certificate)

All lights work. Brakes are fine. Horn works, Have one mirror, not sure do i need two? What else should i be checking, it's stock AF. :)

Any help appreciated , just so i have done what i can before dropping $$$ on a 1st RWC.

Cheers.

Z

Edit: on a side note, my bike licence expired a decade+ ago, never kept the payments up when i sold zx6. So not exactly sure, if i need to go back to get my L's (again). Any info on this is welcome too.

I'm in NSW but.........

I would go and talk to an Authorized Inspection Station or a friendly bike shop.

Old rego papers will be handy.

OEM muffler will probably be required.

Full knobbies, even with "for highway use only", are okay in NSW - the only regs apply to soundness of construction - decarbonisation cracks in the sidewall are enough for a rejection.

Two mirrors are required.

Good luck.

In relation to your licence. As long as you had a full motorcycle licence and still have your car licence there should be an endorsement on it for bikes 'R' for vic licences. So you can still ride in that case. If all you had was a learners and let it expire, its back to L plates, which isnt too bad as you areriding a 250 and is considered a LAMS (Learner approved).

In relation to the bike, its basically got to be as it came out of the factory, with a few exceptions. Exhaust can be mod as long as it is stamped with db rating 94 and actually is. Tyres can be knobbies but have to be road legal like Dunlop D606 or similar and good condition with required tread depth. Two mirrors, mud guards, all lights as original, ie, constant low beam on all the time, high beam, all signals functional, and brake and tail lights. Side stand cut out must be working. They will check brake disc thickness and pad thickness. Emission controls if any must be standard and connected etc. All cables etc free and moving etc and not frayed. Even things like hand grips, brake or clutch pedal rubbers if they were original etc. Speedo must work. What else? Fork seals not leaking, shock the same, oil leaks etc, chain and guards, sprockets good contition.  Thats for full standard road rego in Vic.

Rec rego in Vic is great if youre only bush riding etc. Lower standards and a lot cheaper.

Most decent bike shops will know exactly or even Vic Roads if you want to wait on the phone for an hour, be tranfered everywhere, cut off and have to ring again. No just forget that go to a good bike shop, they probably even might do the RWC.

Cheers
Cam

Cam is spot on.
Make sure your huge mudguard extender, number plate holder is fitted with working number plate light, all lights and blinkers working, factory exhaust would be easiest, chain guards etc are all fitted up like from the factory you should be right. Tyres should be road legal , knobbies are ok as long as they don't say not for highway use.

rec rego is Victoria is great, I run that you only need lights and a horn, and you are legal in the bush with full TAC cover for about $80 a year. Can't ride in towns or major highways though.

In Victoria your bike licence doesn't expire as Cam says. Its attached to your car licence, so only expires if you don't pay for your car licence. You should see R on the front under licence type above where it says car. If that's not there you will need to get a learners permit and go through that process with one of the private companies that do that training.

When you book the bike in to the bike shop for the RWC ask all your questions and get it right before you take it in

Thanks all.
Will double check the bike. I need a left hand mirror then. But the rest i think may pass. Stock exhaust, stock rear guard the big long ugly one.
Brief check on tires, can not see any not for highway use, I personally think these tires are not the originals.

Had to lol at the comment ringing vic roads, waiting an hr, being transfered!!!!
THATS EXACTLY what i was hoping to avoid. :) and has been my experence to date.
also was hoping not to turn up to RWC shop drop the money, and then get a fail on tires, wasting money. Not sure i have had any vehicle pass on 1st inspection for some daft reason. Then again been a while

i did think of going rec reg, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THAT AS A MINIMUM in vic, unless you want to get fines....i think i'd like to road reg it which i think then includes being able to ride in rec reg areas... you're right though, lead to believe reg rec is < $100 a yr whilst on road will be considerably more.

Good advice
Hoping to do this soonish, i'm off for 6 weeks in 4 weeks, so might wait until i get back, but get it as ready as i can before hand.

RWC = MOT (UK) buts reading what a MOT entails less strict than that.

Two mirrors required, make sure the lights & horn work, if worried about the tyres throw a pair of D603 / D605 or D606's on $200 well spent.

Not sure about Vic. but here in SA rego is $90 for 3 months

Cheers Terry

Cheers terryk,
Yeah i think i had a wtf moment, off course it needs two mirrors.... errr duh me!!! :) not sure where my head was @

I need to buy left hand mirror, and a rear mudguard reflector i guess (original fell off)
plus other tech things mentioned above, like disc rotors, pads et al. Cheers again for that.

Rear tire is maxxis 120/100-18 68m???
Front tire is kenda millville 80/100-21
No marking saying not for highway use.

But rear is oversize (i think) as it has eaten out the rear mudguard that sits behind the airbox that goes down to swing arm
Really $90 per 3 months...... seems steep.
At this stage i think if i can get away with it, will fully road reg it.
Cheers
