Help - my TTR is shredding starter pinions!

Hi all bought a 1993 ttr 250 about 6 months ago and it's been running really nice in till recently I've been having problems with the starting motor getting stripped I've changed the sprag clutch, checked all the idle gears and they seemed fine put a new starter motor in and after 2 rides it was stripped again could this problem  be because off eBay copy starting motors or could my 72 16 cog be slightly worn any help appreciated thanks guys.

Hi Peter and welcome to the forum!

Just a few thoughts.

Did you fit a genuine Yamaha sprag clutch?

Was the boss that it runs on (Gear 3) in good order and not worn?

Did you fit all the gear washers correctly? Easy to lose one or miss one out if doing the job for the first time.

The starter gear teeth have to be perfect if the starter pinion is to survive. Did you see any damage on your Gear 1?

After-market starter motors have a reputation for poor quality steel used in their pinions which is why Totally TTRs now only sells the genuine Yamaha starters.

Lots more information here http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t48824180/starter-motor-problems-and-solutions-megathread/

I hope you can get it sorted!

Brian

Thankyou for the quick reply Brian yes I purchesd the sprag clutch and solinoid from you last week.all the idle gears seem fine all bearing washers in correct can only think that the 72 16 tooth looks a little worn.could that be the problem why it's grinding my starter motor ends.

Ah - you would have bought those parts from Steve but good you got the genuine parts.

If your starter gear is looking even slightly worn/damaged then best replace it in case it shreds another starter pinion.

Also, if funds don't allow a new OEM starter, it's better to buy a good used one than an after-market one - in my opinion wink
