I would say 1000 miles or more is fine (1600km), or just do it when you feel the gear change has become slightly 'clunkier'. Its not a KTM! Pretty sure the manual says 1500 miles anyway. But that is probably more aimed at road riding..

If you get yourself a mesh filter you can just swill it through with wd40 and reuse it, they hardly ever have any bits in them at oil change anyhow

Think i will put a oil cooler on it... Will give a few extra drops of oil in the

system...

The worry I have is with a build up of clutch fiber in the oil as it

has a Rekluse clutch in it.....

Oil change?

1st buy a 'gold' sump plug on here.

Change a soft 12mm hex to a sturdy 17mm one, believe me, I'm a marine engine fitter, I speak the truthaww

Oil change schedule
Permalink

This came up a while back about the oil change schedule on the TTR & I said I do it at 5000kms & not 10000kms as stated in the operators manual, anyhow I picked up my TTR today as I told the wife I was getting way too many kms on the WRR. Looked up the manual & yes 10k, but in a older manual it said 1k as someone on here said.My TTR is one of the last sold here in Australia so the schedule may be different

Thanks for posting Terry, very interesting. I was the one that asked you about it. I do mine around 800 to 1000k was doing them earlier (4-500k) initially but seems a waste of good oil!

I change the oil on my DRZ at 4000k (5k recommended 1.7l of oil). I think Mark Van posted that he did his TTR oil changes at around 2000k.

I wonder how 1.2 litres of oil can last 10,000k though and the recommendation to check the oil filter every 20,000k. Where did that manual come from?

My interest in this on the odd long adventure ride I have planned if I went over 1000k maybe did 1500 k or more I probably would just do it and not worry about oil changes, and have been interested in others experiences with longer service intervals.

Leigh.

If anyone is interested I previously used Sikolene 10-40w semi synthetic oil for around $60 for 4 litres (cheaper on special every now and then). I've switched to a "car" oil, Penrite GAS 10 - its often $35 for 5 liters, 10-50w, semi synthetic, JASO MA certified suitable for wet clutches etc. Been fine in both bikes. Well tested by many other bike riders.

I downloaded the owner manual but it was different to the one I got with the bike so I searched the part number of the manual & hey presto....search for 4PX-28199-2G

It's less than 3mb so I can email if required

Cheers Terry

Thanks for the info Terry, downloaded that just now. Looks like the Aussie owners manual V's the American one - which has more comprehensive workshop info.

For the American and pure offroad market I guess thats why 1000k is recommended but 10,000k for the Aussie market. I guess as its marketed as a roadtrail road miles are less stressful, but 10,000k seems a long time hey

Well it answers my question, and I'm not at all concerned now if I go over 1000k on one service. They must be a sturdy motor if its even possible to suggest a 10,000k oil change   Bit shocked to read that to be honest.

So you have done a few 5000k services Terry?

Oil Change
Permalink

My new to me 1997 TT250R is coming along nicely, two weeks of cleaning and polishing, seat being refurbished, new fork gators from Steve we are going to look good.

Last job is to change oil and filter. Can I use Castrol Power 1 10W-40 the same used in my Suzuki sports bike.??

Hi Malcolm

I use Fuchs Silkolene Super 4 10W-40 semi-synthetic oil. I think that your Castrol oil is semi-synthetic so my guess is that it's OK to use wink

More info here http://www.ttr250.com/#Oil_filter

Brian

PS Looking forward to seeing some photos of your TTR biggrin

If it's never going offroad you should look at turning it into a motard...

Im about to change the oil on my bike after 600 miles.

I was thinking of just changing the oil and then doing the filter and oil every other oil change so at 1200 miles.

I would be interested in peoples opinions on this as too me a new filter every 600 miles seems a bit excessive.

The bike is used for trail riding its not raced. I'm too slow!

Thanks in advance

Ross

This appears elsewhere but i think it should be here

Apparently I change mine more often than most!

Oil about every 3 rides (typically 100 miles each) and filter every 3 or 4 changes.

Mines an OE without oil cooler and the oil comes out manky....

I'm with Devon Rich and change mine out after about 3 or four rides, usually about three or four hundred km, or when the oil gets a bit dark.
Usually the gear changes will be noticeably worse if the oil starts going off so the bike will tell you.

There is a big difference in maintenance depending on usage. If you are cruising along clocking up easy miles there isn't a lot of stress so oil changes can be stretched out for more hours and miles. As opposed to clutch slipping, revving and getting hot on slow technical terrain or racing or pushing the engine in deep sand..

oil is cheap compared to engine rebuilds.

I bought my bike about two months ago , and the gentleman seemed nice and trustworthy, I’ve been on it for about three hours in total,  and and where I’m not used to four strokes , I thought it sounded abit tapordee, but the man said he had just done oil change, but it kept bugging me, so undon sump nut and to my surprise,it was the worse oil I’ve ever seen in my life. And the filter well I could not see how oil would have got though it ? I’m still in shock ,   Well at least I no what a four stokes should sound like now thank god I changed it, lesso for everyone if u don’t know the person you buying bike from , be careful!!!!!?

Took bike out today, what a difference, it’s like riding a new motorcycle , gearbox smooth, and it definitely doesn’t get has hot as much! And not as noisy as it was ! And seems to have abit my power, which might be because I tighten the chain and lubed it , now the front wheel comes up in 2 , and 3 nicely but still think the front forks not.good I was going to get some yz forks but my mate said try get better spings and good think oil for them first? Because the ya ones Might fit.but will knock the geometry out? He might be wrong but he did used to work on my motocross bikes back in the 90s

Just service the forks and check the damping settings. They are normally pretty good when looked after.
If you can get a yz shock to fit, you will be the first!
