My DT would start without a battery. The spinning alternator was enough for a spark. Once the engine was running it produced too many wiggley so the diode dumped the spare current straight to the earth on the frame I think. It's a long time ago but I remember the headlight used to dim and brighten dependant on the engine speed.
I think you need the battery to soak up the variations in power coming from the stator. Without it, in theory, the bike should run because the stator provides the power to keep the spark going, lights on etc (as soon as it starts spinning with the kick), plus extra to keep the battery charged. BUT, without it, you might run the risk of frying something sensitive, and expensive, like the cdi. The cdi might also need 12 volts supplied before the engine is running, to allow it to "switch on", but I'm not sure of this.
I think you should at least have a capacitor in place to soak up the spikes in power (sorry, can't advise you what size) If you are just trying to save weight you could maybe try fitting a much smaller 12v battery, but I wouldn't try running without one.
Just use the throttle more to make up for the weight
