First off, a quick introduction. I’m Ollie, and I’ve had my TTR for a while now (a year or 18 months, can’t remember exactly). It’s a K reg metal tank version. I use it for green laning so it gets a bit battered and bruised, but I always give it a lot of TLC after each trip!
There’s one slightly odd fault that I can’t quite figure out. When sat at constant revs for a while, say on a motorway, as soon as I let off the throttle the bike cuts out. It then won’t start again until I come to a complete stop and press the starter button, ie it won’t start while still rolling. When riding at any other time I can rev it fine, and it doesn’t show any signs of a single issue, it’s only after a prolonged stretch. I thought it may be running lean but the plug looks ok, and I stripped the carb and that looked ok too; however, I couldn’t remove all of the jets as they seem a bit stuck in so that may be the issue, but those that came out (it was a while back so apologies in advance as I can’t remember which ones) looked fine.
I know now there’s a lot of people on here quite handy with a spanner. Anyone heard of/seen this happening before?
Welcome to the forum Ollie, does it start straight back up then when you stop? There maybe an issue with the side stand switch if it still has one fitted??
Yeah it will start when I’m stopped, but it’s the fact that this only happens on a prolonged stretch (doesn’t have to be going fast, just constant revs) that makes me think it isn’t side stand related. I’ll definifely check though.
The breather could be a good shout. I’m doing some work on it next week so I’ll check that out at the same time.
Another possibility is that the petrol filter on the tap or above the float valve might be partially blocked. Lets enough petrol through normally but on a sustained WOT it doesn't let the petrol in fast enough and the float bowl gradually empties.
Easy check. Take out the float bowl drain screw (carefully so as not to round the head!) and put a rag underneath then turn on the petrol and check it flows out fast. Best not to be having a fag whilst doing this
That is definitely worth a check. I can’t help thinking it has to be some sort of carb problem. I don’t smoke, but might start just to make the job slightly more exciting...
I’ll check all of the above and report back next week. Hopefully it sorts it, as it’s just one of those annoying little problems at the moment!
