Nice to know you can get genuine Yamaha parts from me for not much more than the ali express stuff.
Be warned with the starter, I got one in to try and the pinion was made of cheese and did not last very long Think Brian tried them and found the bushes did not last long, best to try the used alternative, the thread is on this forum.
That looks nasty. Hope you managed to find the broken bits!
Steve is right in that I stocked the after-market starters for a while but had a few problems with them - mainly the magnets breaking up inside the starter. They haven't got the retaining band that the genuine Yam starters have got. Steve has good used genuine starters here
Or if you have an after-market starter then an upgrade to the magnets and body is available here
What caused the damage Arthur - a worn sprag clutch? If that's the case then the same will happen again if it is not replaced
That is some bad kick back damage, surely the other idler gears are damaged? If so Bri is right just change them all and you do not have to find that size.
I was in Carpathian mountains Ukraine for a week. Two days before leaving country sprag clutch became noisy. Since travel distance from my house to Ukraine is about 650miles and it takes 20 hours by car to come here I decided to make a final ride on the last day. I knew the problem with starter may show up and I didn't want to leave in the base in bar with beer(s) :) So, I rode... And sprag clutch completely sized in the mountains in the middle of the day. Hopefully I could start the bike by pushing it from the hills/mountains and shift to 2dn gear and it started without problems. There was minor oil leak coming from the engine.
However I needed to go back to the base 8 miles up and down before late evening. I reached the base successfully, oil level was OK.
Now, after three weeks later I found some time to check for the damage. Left cover, bearing, sprag clutch, starter gear is damaged: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AstbUZulPF2rglWlIFIDpegBmC5e
Interesting thing is that the faulty sprag clutch seems to work again, but I will replace it anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J83n4NNzP4
Cover and bearing I have from spare engine. Sprag clutch I bought from aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/TTR-250-Overrunning-clutch-beads/1899894304.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.pWKwSu
I already replaced this part for another two TTRs. That Chinese parts did not fail so far. Doesn't seem to be peace of rubbish. So, I bought one more for my current 3rd TTR :) Hopefully it will last long.
So, starter gear is my target now. If I don't find 16/15 I will buy used OEM 16/14 and 72/19 from Steve's shop.

During last day we were driving in the forest mountains. So, it was much more enduro (rocks, stones, wood on the road). I have fitted thermometer to measure the temperature of cylinder. It was showing +156C. Usually it shows about +115 - +125C not in the mountains :)
I bought it from here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-Digital-Blue-LCD-Thermometer-Temperature-Panel-Meter-With-Probe-Sensor-NG4S/2046690436.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.7TFnJu
It is 12 DC and stated measures Max Measuring Temperature:120°C & Above.
I was riding in elevation till 1 mile with gear 13/48. I did not change the carb jetting or needle. I live in evalation 120-250 meters. It was OK with gearing and carb. I was not happy with rear tire I fitted used Michelin mousse (compatible 100/100/18 for cross and 120/90/18 enduro) into my 120/90/18. The tire was to soft and looked like had very low air. This is how it looks now without driver: https://1drv.ms/i/s!AstbUZulPF2rglTW7hO4UuSSXWFq
I did not find all bits just a few sitting on the magnet. I drained the oil maybe some other are in the bottle need to double check. Splitting the engine case is not in my plan.
