Correct procedure to check oil level

Do you guys check it when the engine is dead cold (been sitting overnight) or do you warm the engine up for a minute or so then let it sit for 5-10 then check it?

I swear I read somewhere you check the TTR cold but everyone I know with a more modern bike checks it with the other method

I always check mine cold!

However, the owners manual (downloadable here) says start it up and run for  a few minutes first hmm
