So here's a strange one. Wanted: Someone to restore/rebuild my engine.

Long story short, a few years ago I bought a cheap well used Raid to go greenlaning, but as usual my OCD of having things "right" got the better of me and I wanted it stripping down powdercoating/painting and putting back together.

There was no issue with the bike other than it was scruffy because it was used to commute on.

Que my Father who had retired. I had/have no time to do these things so off it went to him were as usual he stripped it down in no time. I bought all new stainless fittings, got the shock rebuilt and everything got powder coated. Then as usual nothing happened for months. Bits and bobs got done, the rear end was loosely bolted together, the rims got new tyres and thenit stopped being looked at for a long time.

After hassling him for ages he came up with the great excuse of having a massive stroke and will be forever pretty much disabled.

The bike has sat in bits for years. The top end of the engine was taken off to get the cylinder and head coated. /also the side cases needed doing, as did the sprag.

So what I'd like now is someone who loves reconditioning/rebuilding engines to make it pretty and put it all back together. If the thing is in large bits there's much more of a chance of it going again.

Does anyone know anyone who'd want to take it on? The bottom end is all together but that can come apart as well if that's what it takes to get it looking nice.

I'm in the North West , but can deliver or send it just about anywhere. Obviously I'll pay for any parts that need replacing that I haven't already got, and also if we can come to an agreement, payment for the work.

This is what it looks like currently.

Anyone fancy a little project or know anyone who may be interested?

Cheers Spud.

Hi Roger

First and foremost, I do hope that your father is OK and will make a good recovery.

As to the engine, you could buy this https://totallyttrs.com/epages/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84.sf/en_GB/?ObjectID=8767256

Good upgrade and a really sorted engine, with a kicker.

Might be able to do you a exchange on your engine? what do you think?

Steve

To be honest Steve I don't think the bike is worth that sort of investment. My engine was strong it just needs going over and reassembling, and I'd like t powder coating for durability rather then paint.

When it 1st came up for sale it did tempt me but it's best for me not to invest that much money in a TTR. When I'd realised my mistake of giving my Father anything do in a short time I bought another Raid. If it does 100 miles a year I'd be surprised.

I have had an engine soda blasted and sprayed in two-pack paint but not tried powder coating.

How would that work? Presumably all the bearings and seals would have to be removed because of the heat involved in the process. I am sure it will have been done before but how do the mating surfaces and internals get protected from the process?

Thanks for the wishes, he's always slowly improving even after all this time but 1 arm and 1 leg won't ever be much use again.

I probably could sell it as a project and now everything is powdered and I have all new stainless bolts it will probably quite easy and nice to work on as it's all new and clean. It just doesn't sit right with me and I'd like to see it going.

Regarding the engine maybe I made it sound worse than it is. I don't want the crankcases doing. I've actually bought a few small dremel wire cups and I think a few hours with that will bring them up enough. They can be powdered but it would all have to be stripped. The coaters then mask off all the important bits.

If I was going down that route I'd get the cases vapour blasted. They come out like new.

I'd like the barrels, head and side cases doing. Again all the seals and bearings will have to come out and they also get masked off. I've previously already done engines like this and the finish is fine and durable.

hi,sorry for dragging this post up the ladder a bit, have nearly finished putting this engine back together and about to put on the cam cover but noticed no rubber block for top of chain run, looked in supplied manual and it shows a block that is bolted in and yet this cover has no threads in the hole and it would appear to be more of a locating hole than one that has/had a bolt in it,anyone shed some light for me please,
thanks in advance rodge.

will have a good look through the ever decreasing box of bits to see if its there too.

Don't stress - two different cam covers are fitted to TTRs. Some have the block and others do not wink

Cheers Brian, that makes complete sense as not found one in any of the boxes and the cover does not have a tapped hole, onwards and upwards then.
thanks rodge.

sorry for dragging an old thread up but was wondering if i should see signs of life from an oil pump when cranking engine on starter, have tried it and not a lot of oil flowing around,it does have an oil cooler fitted and all i have so far is a dribble of oil at the inlet pipe banjo for cooler.

wondering if this is normal and things will probably be tickety boo when i fire up on bench, thought i would ask for 2nd opinion as not my enginebiggrin

thanks in advance,rodge

Hi Rodge

The best way to check if oil is being pumped properly is to remove the oil check bolt - leave everything else bolted up tight.

Turning the engine over should result in a significant amount of oil pumping out so have a decent sized rag handy to catch it!

hi Brian,i'm assuming i would need the engine running to fill oil ways then as the starter would not be sufficient on it own then, and yep the oil filter chamber is bone dry except for oiled new filter and did have bleed screw open, oil does have a long way to travel firstly uphill to cooler before it goes back into engine oil ways,
