i have got an m Reg ttr that I'm having issues with.
Just replaced the battery and starter motor brushes.when I press the starter button I just get a clicking noise.it sounds like the starter is just jammed.
am I looking at a new starter motor and where do I get one?
It could be a bad contact in the solenoid. To check, use a fairly substantial bit of metal (bid spanner?) to short out the terminals on the solenoid. If the starter is good (and the solenoid bad) then the starter will spin. Take care - there will be a few sparks!
If the starter doesn't spin then it could be that the brushes aren't making good contact with the commutator?
To get a good flow of current to the solenoid, it may also be worth cleaning the starter button. To do that, unscrew the two Philips head screws that clamp it to the handle bars, chop the tiny cable tie that holds the harness firm, unscrew the tiny Philips head self tapping screws, take the switch out from the switch housing, take the switch apart being careful not to loose any parts (after taking note of how it all goes) and clean the contacts up.
Make sure that the wires are still solidly soldered to the switch and there is no fraying. Any fraying of the wire will result in the starter relay receiving voltage that is way too low, resulting in stater relay failure. Don't forget to replace the tiny cable tie.
Once the switch is together it would be advisable to check if it is getting full voltage through the switch using a multimeter to check. Simply earth the black side of the multimeter to the frame or motor and testing the voltage that runs through the switch when the start button is pressed.
A member has contacted me regarding his TTR that won't run:-
"I wonder if anyone can help. My bike won't start. Went to it the other day, started no problem, ran for 10 seconds or so, then faded and stopped.
I just spent a fortune overhauling the carburettor thinking that would be the problem, but no it wasn't.
I’ve been checking the wiring connector blocks etc., cleaning them as I go. Checked the spark plug and I noticed a white weak looking spark, perhaps this is my problem.
Could it be the ignition coil? The spark should be blue I think?
I don't think it's the carburettor as almost everything in it is new. The carburettor is spotless, I blew it all out, the airways etc.
There is also a voltage regulator I noticed and an electronic box of tricks in the ignition circuit.
Any common ignition problems that you could advise about?
Many thanks"
I would first of all point him to this old 2011 article CLICKY on a similar problem.
Could still be fuel. Breather on the tank cap blocked causing a vacuum and stopping the fuel flow?
If the owner opens the drain on the float bowl is there a good constant flow of petrol?
The fact that it starts suggests the plug is OK. Assuming the engine and valve timing is OK, it could be the HT lead or cap or coil breaking down when warmed up but these parts rarely fail....
Could be something as odd as a sheared Woodruff key on the flywheel...........
I had a loose connection on my stator once and created the same problem, I was out green roading in Yorkshire and it was only a phone call to TTR Towers that helped me work it out.
Hi Steve and Martyn, spark is there but weak, white colour. I think a strong spark is blue?
Steve I really like the ttr manual, a proper job.
I'm going to test the resistance of the coil now, let's hope I get a result.
Thanks both...
Clive
Oh and I'll check the stand switch whilst I'm at it but I think this provides an interlock on the starter motor circuit and not the ignition side of things?
Clive
Checked coil resistance. Over twice as high as specified in ttr manual for both primary and secondary. So I'm ordering one from Steve, totallyttrs.

If the stand is put down with the engine running and bike in gear it will shut off the ignition circuit so its not in the starter circuit as such.
Thank you. I checked all switches whilst I had the meter
out, even though they probably aren't causing my problem. All AOK.
Hopefully the new coil will sort it now, and with virtually a new carburettor, the ttr should be good to go! Fingers crossed
